You want a nice pet, but you live in a small apartment or condo unit. What can you do, when they say “no pets allowed.” That usually means no cats or dogs allowed, and a parrot will squawk so much your neighbors will lynch you. So what kind of pet can you get that’s quiet, clean, doesn’t smell bad, and can fit into a small apartment? Here’s a list of the best apartment pets:
1 – Tarantula
Don’t discard this idea this right away. Tarantulas don’t make any noise, don’t have any bad odors, and are very clean. You never have to clean the terrarium – they do it for you! Not always cuddly, but many species can be handled and will crawl on your hand. They only eat once a week, so it’s no problem if you go on vacation! Tarantulas make nice pets.
2 – Aquarium Goldfish
Goldfish are easier to maintain than other tropical fish. A 20 gallon or larger aquarium never has to be drained or cleaned, as a good filter system will do this for you. Just change the filter once a week. Easy.
3 – Small BIrds: Finches
Finches don’t make the loud noises that parrakeets and other birds make, and they can even be hand tamed. They tweet a little, but not enough to be heard next door. Finches should be kept in groups of 2 or more, as they are very social. Let them fly around the apartment for exercise. Canaries are also quiet; they sing all day, but their voices are soft.
4 – Small Mice
Mice are cute and cuddly, and don’t mind being held and petted. They don’t make any noise, and no smells as long as you clean the cage once a week. They are small and can fit in a small cage.
5 – Lizards
Iguanas and newts are quiet and odorless, but do require a larger terrarium. Still, they can be handled easily, and eat fruits and vegetables just like you!
6 – Hermit Crabs
No mess, no noise, no odor. Easy and small.
7 – Frogs and Turtles
These require a bit more care, but are quiet and small enough for any room.
8 – Toucan, and its smaller cousin the Toucanet
The toucan, or fruit-loops bird, is the other quiet bird you can have. They make a soft clicking sound, unlike the high pitched squeals parrots make. They are messy, but you can make a nice corner of the apartment into a living space with a guard to keep fruit from flying everywhere when they eat. They must be able to fly around the apartment for exercise! Easy to tame, and they love being handled.
9 – Hamsters
They are messier and smellier than mice, but also furrier and cute. I’d prefer mice, but hamsters can be nice pets, if you clean their cage twice a week.
10 – Small Snakes
These aren’t for everyone, but snakes can make nice pets. Certain species can be easily handled. They make no noise or smell. No one will every know it’s in your condo… unless it gets out!
