It is not an arguable statement that later 2013 releases such as Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World are going to be system sellers and amazing titles in their own right for Nintendo’s currently ailing Wii U console. What is arguable, however, is that there have been numerous titles already released for the system that deserve hungry gamers attention just as much, if not even more, then those above-mentioned future killer apps- they’ve just been released exclusively for the system’s eShop, and not in a matte cotton candy blue box with a massive advertising budget. The indie gaming market, popularized by such platforms as Steam in recent years, has been growing at an exponential rate, and in a power move on Nintendo’s part, they’ve been inviting multiple solo indie developers and independent dev houses to work on games for their budding Wii U eShop.
Furthermore, the impending release of such downloadable titles as DuckTales Remastered and Cloudberry Kingdom nearing closer, there’s much to get enthusiastic and cheery about in terms of future releases. The most glorious thing about this all, however, is that there are plenty of great titles available on the Wii U eShop right now that can provide you with an amazing gaming experience for relatively cheap while waiting for even more indie/Nintendo gaming goodness.
Kung Fu Rabbit
This platformer raised some hares upon its original release on iOS and Android devices when it was being developed by, respectively, Cazap and Ctools, but it’s arguable that the dev house of Cocoto fame, Neko Entertainment, took the hare-raising title to an entirely new level of awesome with its upscaled HD antics and reformatted controls. If you’re looking for an extremely above average platforming title oozing with ingenuity, you could do a lot worse than Kung Fu Rabbit.
The best part? It’s available for only $4.99 on the Wii U eShop right this second.
Nano Assault Neo
Fans of the DS and 3DS cult hits Nano Stray, Nano Stray 2 and Nano Assault should feel right at home with this HD addition to the series, featuring all sorts of new viruses to shoot up and take down with perfectly precise controls in a variety of surreal settings. While the price tag at $9.99 is a little steeper than Kung Fu Rabbit, it’s well worth the cost. Shin’en Multimedia is a company that has proven itself to be a force to be reckoned with in terms of quality in the space shooting business for well over a decade with titles such as Iridion 3D under its belts, and Nano Assault Neo proves no different in continuing that legacy for them.
If you’re a fan of the genre, do yourself a big favor and just splurge right now on this great, great title.
Out of all of the titles available for the Wii U eShop right now, Chasing Aurora easily wins the “Most Beautiful” award. The title proves that there is something truly serene and gorgeous about simplicity as its paper craft-like birds fly above cut-out mountain ranges and against painted gusts of wind. What makes this title especially brilliant, however, is that it’s not just a beautiful game in terms of its aesthetics- it’s a beautiful game, period. It makes the best out of what its most basic gameplay aspects have to offer, creating an exciting and unique title that can be just as delightful whether it is being played solo or with a crowd. $14.99 might be a bit steep for an eShop release, but it’s a $14.99 that is well worth it.
This is one title that you really just have to play yourself to understand, and once you get a shot at doing so you’ll be glad that you let yourself take that risk.
Toki Tori 2
The much-awaited sequel to the brilliant Game Boy Color arcade-style classic is here, and it’s in fully-rendered HD graphics on the Wii U eShop! If you’ve ever had a hankering to go at it again with that delightful yellow chap after playing his original title for the Game Boy Color or through Nintendo’s old WiiWare service, or if you’re just a fan of games that make an intuitive twist on classic gameplay, then you can do yourself a favor and download this title here for $14.99.
Be warned: at times it can be tough as nails, but that’s all a part of its retro “Tori” charm.
Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition
Last but most certainly not least, you have yourself Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition. As you may have assessed, this title is a remake of the insanely original Mighty Switch Force! for the Nintendo 3DS. Miraculously, it manages to take everything that was great about the title upon which it is based from and builds upon it ten times over in brilliance. Everything about this title here is an improvement upon the first Mighty Switch Force! title which it has remade and expanded on in every way, and by any and all means, if you are a Wii U owner and a fan of games that reinvent the genres from which they are based off of in completely fresh and totally awesome ways and are dressed in a fine coat of magnetic charm, then you need to purchase Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition and give it a whirl right this very moment.
