There are many reasons why people can’t sleep at night, but the most common appears to be stress. Whatever you are facing in life remember that sleep is a necessity that keeps your heart beating. Insomnia is a problem that needs to be addressed by you and your doctor. Here are just a few things you can try on your own:
Get off the computer – Of course, read this article first. But seriously, internet has so much information that is being thrown at you. You get on the site of your choice and as soon as you finish watching one video there are ten more that popped up. Information is good. As a matter of fact, if I need to find something quickly I run to the internet. However, internet before bed time is a bad idea since the images you saw will continue to lay in your mind as you are trying to go to sleep. Your brain processes everything it saw and this can keep you up for hours.
Get off TV – If you are watching the ten o’clock news try to watch them earlier in the day, maybe when you get home from work. Bad news, which is most what is on TV nowadays, can get your blood pressure up and stress you out. As a result, instead of going to bed you will stay up talking to your spouse about everything you saw in the news. Same rule applies to any electronic devices you are addicted to, including texting to your friends.
Read a book – Nothing can get you sleepy faster than reading a book. Remember the times when you were doing homework and you had to read a novel? Just kidding. If you read a great novel you may end up staying awake all night, wanting to finish it. If you read a short story, or a magazine before bed time this helps you calm down and relax.
Drink a glass of warm milk – A good way to relax is to drink a glass of warm milk. Although it might not make you sleepy, it will help you relax and prepare you for a more restful night.
Drink chamomile tea – You can find this tea at any grocery store. Pregnant women should consult with a physician before drinking it, as this tea can cause contractions. I posted a link below so that you can learn more about this tea.
Make your room dark – If your room is not dark enough already, invest in some hotel grade drapes. Some of this curtains even block out noise coming from the road, if you live in the city.
Declutter your bedroom – Have you noticed that when you sleep in a hotel sometimes you sleep better than at home? A hotel room has only the necessities in it, some have a little more than others, but the point is that a clean room and house makes for a relaxed mind.
Buy an air purifier – We use an air purifier to block out any noise coming from the road, plus it cleans the air. A fan, or anything else that makes white noise should work. You can even buy a nature sound generator from your local store.
Take a bubble bath – Baths before bed are amazing. It creates an atmosphere of relaxation and the warmth of the water can get you sleepy in no time.
Get on a regular schedule – This works for adults as well as for children. If you set up a bed time and stick to it, you will find out that you will get more sleep than if you go to sleep at random hours. The first week you may lay there awake for an hour or so until your body gets adjusted to rest. Soon you should fall asleep much faster.
If you tried all of the above and still can’t sleep at night, try to change your pillow and your mattress. Sometimes just flipping the mattress over may help. Either way, don’t forget to go see your doctor as insomnia is nothing to play with.
