Many stay-at-home moms can say that having an extra income is the way to go. You want to be able to make ends meet and live comfortably, but “how?” is the question you keep asking yourself. How can you make a steady income and still enjoy the comforts of taking care of home and the kiddos. Here are some of the things you can do to turn your favorite hobby into a money-making opportunity. This list was compiled using encounters with other stay-at-home moms and personal experience.
Sewing has become a favorite pastime for many people I know, including myself. I figure if you know it, you can sew it. A good way to make money with sewing is to put all of your items on your website with order numbers and very good descriptions. You want to give the person some type of vision of themselves wearing the item. With so many trends happening daily, it would be impossible for you not to sell. Make sure you have a niche, something that is unique and appealing. You want something that is irresistible to the eye.
2. Jewelry Making
Handmade items are awesome. They are personal, one of a kind, very sellable items and enjoyable to see. To sell your handmade jewelry or even purchased jewelry, go with Ebay or Etsy.
Wedding cakes, birthday cakes, pies, and all, baking will never get old. So why not make money while doing it. Have your own bake sale, post an ad on craigslist with pictures of your cake designs and baking skills and promote yourself.
4. Selling Produce From Your Garden
If you have a beautiful garden, like I wish to someday have (sigh), and you have extra leftover produce, head to the nearest farmer’s market and sell, sell, sell!! Better than that, you could pass out flyers in your neighborhood or take your produce to a local public location and sell it yourself.
5. Selling Avon, Mary Kay
Selling skincare products is always in! These companies offer percentage of commission off the products you sell. They also offer the option to buy the product and just sell it yourself.
Babysitting for the stay-at-home mom is just like taking care of your own just a little extra. If you can stand to take on more children, go for it.
7. Pet Sitting
If you know someone who is going out of town, if they need a pet sitter, you can charge them for room and board or if you like to get out and take the baby for a stroll, add a pup or two. It’s an easy way to get make extra money.
Blogging is something that so many people do these days. If you feel that you’re an interesting person, blog about it, tell the world, but be sure to set up a Google AdSense account so you can run ads on your blogs. The more readers you get, the more clicks and more money you will receive over time.
If you know how to paint, take your art to Etsy and sell it. There are a lot of places where you can sell your art. Just type in “sell artwork online” in any search engine and you’re sure to find something.
Everyone cooks and if you love it so much that you are sure to measure every ingredient to perfect every dish, you should be getting paid for it. Cater parties, weddings, events, or if you are looking into getting a TABC or food handler’s license, you can sell from home. As long as you research and follow guidelines, you should be good.
Writing Jobs are becoming the job to have for the stay-at-home mom. Many of these jobs require the use of the internet and a skill of writing. You can Google different titles like “how to write an article” or “ways to write” for tips on the writing process start by jotting down what you do daily or poetry, just to get the feel of it.
If you are super smart and you love to help people, you should look into tutoring. Place ads on craigslist or other social networks to get the word out that you tutor and start bringing in the dough!
13. Giving Lessons (instruments, teach a different language)
Enjoy playing the piano? Violin? Tuba? If so, teach it! Give a lesson and teach others what you know and get paid for it.

There are certain inspections that are needed when crossing into food handling or preparation, so be sure to look that up. As for everything else, you can do it all from home with access to a computer, a free website, a camera, to take care of inventory, and most of all, a PayPal account to get paid!
