In my opinion, the 1992 USA Dream Team is the best basketball team of all-time. With players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, I don’t think any basketball team that could be put together would be able to beat them. Even with recent USA Olympic basketball teams, including LeBron James and Carmello Anthony, I still don’t even think they’d be able to come close.
1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea
The USA Team, coached by Georgetown’s John Thompson, came home with the bronze metal in the Olympics in Seoul, South Korea in 1988. Even with stars like David Robinson, Mitch Richmond, and Danny Manning, they were defeated by the Soviet Union in the semifinals. Determined for greatness and the gold, the United States would make some serious changes to their team. However, no one could ever dream of what was about to happen next.
1992 USA Dream Team
The first member of this first-class team was the Coach, Chuck Daly. He coached the Detroit Pistons to back-to-back championships in the late ’80s, so he was the perfect pick. The players on the team were Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Chris Mullin, and Christian Laettner. They would dominate the 1992 Olympics in basketball with their showtime and superstar moves. With the assists from Magic Johnson, dunks from Michael Jordan, the shooting of Larry Bird, rebounds of Charles Barkley, and the blocks by Patrick Ewing, the 1992 Dream Team changed the world. They were beating teams by an average of 40-50 points a game. They were the most famous people in Barcelona those couple of months. With the team going undefeated and beating Croatia 117-85 in the gold metal game, the United States was back on top and brought home the gold once again.
Even after 1992, the United States still has dominated the Olympics in basketball, except in 2004 where they were bronze medalists. Some of the best players over the years have included Shaquille O’Neal, Isaiah Thomas, Kobe Bryant, Carmello Anthony, and LeBron James, just to name a few. The only changes I would’ve made with the 1992 Dream Team would be to substitute Christian Laettner and Chris Mullin for Dominique Wilkins and Isaiah Thomas. Either way, from all the teams before and after, I still believe the 1992 USA Dream Team is the best basketball team of all-time.
