2014 BAFTA Award Nominations: ‘Gravity’, ‘12 Years a Slave,’ ‘American Hustle’ Lead

by fat vox

Britain’s version of the Oscars presented its nominations of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) on Wednesday. British actress Helen McCrory, best known for her roles in “The Queen” and the James Bond film “Skyfall,” made the announcement. This means the race to the Oscars is getting more fined tuned on who may become best picture contenders.

Leading the pack of BAFTAS is the space-age thriller “Gravity” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney with 11 nominations including best film. Not far behind is the brutally honest film on slavery “12 Years a Slave” and a FBI sting operation set in the ’70s “American Hustle” with 10 nods each. Out of the five nominees for Best Film, four films have remained consistently nominated during the award season: “Captain Phillips,” “American Hustle,” “12 Years a Slave,” and “Gravity.”

“Behind the Candelabra,” the Liberace biopic, received noms in certain film categories, even though technically it was produced by HBO as a TV movie. It received those nominations for adapted screenplay, supporting actor for Matt Damon as Liberace’s lover, Scott Thorson, and other technical categories including costume design.

This award season has had its share of snubs, the BAFTAs are no exception. Meryl Streep was snubbed for leading actress in “August: Osage County,” yet her co-star Julia Roberts received a nomination for supporting actress. Other snubs included Jared Leto and Matthew MacConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club,” and early favorite Robert Redford in “All is Lost.”

BAFTAs’ ceremonies will be held on Sunday, February 16 at the Royal Opera House in London. Here is a complete list of all the nominees.
