It seems as though television shows now-a-days focus on two things: money and sex. The variety is now dwindling, and we are stuck with shows that have absolutely no morals whatsoever. I get tired of having to change the channel due to so much blood, kissing and dead people. However, 21 Jump Street is a classic 1980’s-1990’s series that focuses on good morals while also portraying an interesting story.
I love the fact that even while in suspense, the producers made sure to steer clear of too much profanity. One of the undercover cops can be on a chase and still keep themselves verbally together. Understandably though, when this show originally came out, America had stricter guidelines as to what was and was not accepted on television. Regardless, I feel safe watching this show around anybody- my preacher, my dad, my sisters- you name it.
21 Jump Street is also filled with some of America’s most problematic topics of today such as prostitution, stealing and high school bullying. They do not make a mock of it; they do not pretend as though any of it is okay. There is no sugar-coating of a wrong doing which seems to now prevail in almost everything you watch. Instead, they make sure that they address whatever issue it is as wrong and punish the culprit accordingly. This is where the good morals come in. I feel as though the producers thought that these topics were not discussed well or avoided and needed to be reinforced. I wish that we had a 21st century show where the producers felt the same way.
A little hint of comedy is weaved throughout each 21 Jump street episode. So I hope people understand that there is more to it than just “addressing the issues”. The characters also have some fun and let loose every once in a while- still being clean of course. There is a little something in this show for everybody- the romantics, the comedians and the suspense seekers.
If you look at the cast members from this series, you will notice that a lot of them are easily recognizable from some of our well loved movies of today. Johnny Depp is a prime example. Just knowing this alone is always a reason I pop in one of the 21 Jump Street episodes with a bowl of popcorn at my side. These are genuinely great actors and actresses who look as though they love their job on and off of the set. I don’t really see the true chemistry in some of our “beloved” television shows of today.
For people who are looking to find a genuinely exciting show with little to no major violence or profanity, this would be the show for them! I have been hooked on the series for about 2 years now, and recommend it to everyone I talk to! It is hard to find comedy and suspense without cursing, gory killing segments and sex scenes in the mix, so why not take it back to the better days of television and watch 21 Jump Street?
