Monterey Bay Aquarium
You can’t go to the city of Monterey without visiting the highly acclaimed aquarium. The Monterey Bay Aquarium has been ranked #1 in the U.S. for its exhibits, and it’s easy to see why. With over 35,000 creatures, every member of the family has something to enjoy, from jellyfish and otters, to penguins and sharks. And if you want to spend the day with that special someone, well, you can reserve a romance tour and create lasting memories that way.
Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail
For the outdoorsy types, one of the best things to do in Monterey is visit the trail along the bay. Winding around the Pacific Ocean, this 18-mile trail showcases breathtaking views of both the sea and the wildlife. Kayak, surrey, in-line skates, and bike rentals are available, and if you take the waterfront trail, you’ll come across many of Monterey’s other famous attractions, like Fisherman’s Wharf.
Monterey Museum of Art
If you’re feeling your life needs a spark of culture, visit Monterey’s museum. Kids can get in for free, and an adult’s admission is only $10. There are two different locations, one on Pacific Street, and the other on Via Mirada. On Pacific Street, you can enjoy eight galleries of American and early Californian painting. On Via Mirada, the outdoor garden will make you want to stop and smell the roses.
A true visitor destination, Cannery Row offers fun for everyone with an oceanfront view. World-class restaurants and hotels are located here, along with shopping, spas, wine tasting, and even a mirror maze if you’re feeling up to the challenge! While visiting Cannery Row, you’re surrounded by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, one of the largest in the nation. Cannery Row was made famous by author John Steinback, and is now a top tourist attraction.
Scenic Drive on Highway One
Experience one of the top scenic drives in the world. This road trip will take you through flat wetlands, a fishing port, artichoke fields, sand dunes, coastlines, and cypress forests. If you go even further south, you’ll find redwoods, cliffs, and the bridges of Big Sur that you won’t want to miss. And if you’re feeling up for another scenic road trip, try the 17-Mile Drive. The magnificent scenery will have you snapping photos and staring out the window. Just make sure to keep your eyes on the road, too!
