Home based businesses are popping up everywhere. In order to earn some extra income many people are turning to their more creative side and starting their own business. There are many ways to go about doing this:
- Sell your own services/products/crafts
- Buy and sell used items
- Start a home based franchise
- Network Marketing Businesses
- Multi-Level Marketing businesses
All of these options are great for stay at home moms, freelancers and even full time employees, but one of the biggest problems that face these companies is marketing. There are many ways to get your name and business out there and all it takes is a little creative thinking.
Take advantage of social pages like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn but don’t just create a page and start trying to sell a product, make it a place that provides people with information they can use and link it back to the product or service you sell. A page that just highlights your business is a commercial, and people avoid those at all costs. Write a blog, post articles and link pages that will add value to your product and you will surely see an upswing in hits on your page. Also, post open ended questions that will get people thinking about how your product or service will help them.
These days’ neighborhoods everywhere are hosting local events that bring the community together. Local business expos, community yard sales and tasting events are all great opportunities for any home based business to introduce themselves to the people, and they are usually very inexpensive. Set up a tent and hand out promotional material like business cards, brochures and flyers that highlight your services and give things away. I can’t express how important that is, I know it seems counterproductive but I can’t tell you how often we use a product or service because the stress ball I’ve been squeezing had that businesses name on it. Frisbees, bottle openers, and band aid holders are just a few of the thousands of promotional items out there, and when bought in bulk they are a very cheap investment in your company.
Advertise with Usable Items
Always be on the prospects mind. The best way to do that is provide them with something they see every day. A refrigerator magnet is a great product that can be handed out at local events and is a useable device that is quite often one of the first things someone see’s every morning. A pad of paper sitting on a prospects desk with your name and logo on it is another item that is constantly being used, and if they are using a pen you given to them, you have twice the exposure. The idea here is to be the first one they think of when your product or service is needed.
Network, Network, Network
You are your best advocate for your product or service so get yourself out there and talk it up. There are a multitude of networking groups, Chamber of Commerce events, and local clubs you can join but don’t just stop there. Get with other home based groups and create your own events. Let them help you build your business and you do the same. Getting a good referral is the best compliment to any business so work for each other and watch your business grow.
Be a Model Citizen
Have a positive role in your community, volunteer, join the PTA and get involved. Take these times to NOT talk about your product, however you could wear a shirt or hat with your logo and let people ASK you what you do. Don’t over load them with info, just let them know of an event you have planned or give them your card and move on. The idea here is not to promote your business, rather promote yourself as someone they may want to do business with, a good neighbor.
The business world can be very intense but only if you make it that way. Learn to have fun at what you do and be a positive role model for others, I promise you will and your business will benefit in many ways. It’s not what you do that makes you successful, it’s how you do it and how you feel afterward because success is felt in the heart and in the mind, not necessarily in the pocket book.
