So, what made me want to become an SEO Consultant? It wasn’t exactly a childhood dream, but as I was learning about marketing in college, especially online marketing, I found that SEO touched almost every part of marketing. It involved everything from web design, graphic design, social media, to writing content. Thus, you get to be a part of all the awesome online marketing process. It was exactly what I wanted, a dream come true!
I really enjoy being an SEO Consultant and I actually do get excited about going to work. I love my job so much that I wanted to provide five tips to become a great SEO Consultant.
1. Be Curious
There were roughly 17 major algorithm updates to Google in 2013. That is more than one update a month. This means that SEO is constantly changing and requires you to continually figure out ways to rank in search engines. Be curious about new updates, new techniques, and new strategies. Read about the subject matter as much as you can. There are plenty of books and blogs out there for you to find out more information on SEO. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but not the man in the “white hat”.
2. Test New Ideas
Come up with new ideas and test them out. Try to think of techniques or strategies that no one else has tried before. Just make sure that you have the data to support any new technique that may end up working. This supporting data will help you out big time when distinguishing yourself as a “though leader”. I personally love big data. You can take a deep dive into a large set of data and see if there are any correlations. Once you find the correlations, start testing to see if it is something tangible or just a fluke.
Meet other people in the SEO field. There are a lot of other people out there just like you and if you can discuss various techniques with each other then you may learn new ways of getting ranked. Be curious as I said in tip number one and ask thoughtful and insightful questions to others in the SEO world, you will gain a lot of knowledge along the way. Here is a list of some great places to start networking:
4. Be a “Thought Leader”
Share the knowledge that others are not willing to share. Let people know that you are an SEO guru and not afraid to “spill the beans.” Just because you tell people what works, does not mean that they are capable or have the means to be able to follow through with your advice. Great ways of becoming a “thought leader” are:
- Guest Blogging
- Speaking Engagements
- Teaching Classes/Courses
- Creating “How To” Tutorials
5. Wear a White Hat
SEO is like running a marathon, not a sprint. Promises of number one rankings in less than a week are common “black hat” techniques, but more often than not end up with you never being able to show on page one. Search engines continue to update their algorithms, and techniques that “trick” or “fool” search engines in the short term will not last. Make sure to use techniques that are good, “white hat”, and do not go against search engine guidelines. Just because you haven’t gotten caught with your hand in the cookie jar yet, does not mean that you never will.
