Spring is the natural time for new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s the time of year where most of us are thinking about cleaning our closets and garages – but what about getting a fresh start in our health? Now that winter has come and gone, it’s a great opportunity to start shedding some of that extra weight that found us during the colder months, clearing our minds, and developing new practices in our daily activities that get us back to our healthiest and most vibrant selves.
This season is a a natural time for detox – whether that means you’re clearing out your fridge, your body, or your mind. The weather allows us to get outdoors more to spend time in the energizing atmosphere where bustling new life is cropping up everywhere. The foods that start showing up at our stores are perfect for detoxifying our bodies inside and out for a clean slate so we can start feeling our best. With all these opportunities for some major spring cleaning, here are five ways to get a fresh start in your health for spring!
1. Let the season guide your menu.
With seasonal spring fruits and vegetables making their way to stores, start transitioning out some of the heavy foods you came to rely on in the colder winter months with more raw foods. A few excellent spring foods to bring into your diet are asparagus, ramps, fava beans, artichokes, arugula, beets, scallions, dandelion, beets, and cherries. These foods naturally help you shed excess weight and mucous that you have accumulated over the winter months and can help you actually fight off cold and flu bugs that are often all around you in the springtime.
2. Give your kitchen a spring cleaning treatment.
There’s plenty to be said for clearing out cobwebs and throwing out old clothes you never wear, but a special note should be made for upgrading your kitchen in the spring. Use this time of year to really dig deep in your cupboards to clean out expired foods, replace spices, and jump start a new healthy eating plan by replacing processed unhealthy foods in your pantry and fridge with whole, natural, and fresh options instead.
3. Start a new exercise routine – one that might even take you outside.
Rev up your exercise this spring by taking it outside when the weather permits. With the warmer weather and brighter days, try starting up a new yoga routine that you can take outside. Or start a walking or jogging routine with a neighbor or friend that takes you into nature and gets the sun on your skin – you’ll get some necessary vitamin D and you’ll get the added benefit of not seeing the same people at the gym every day!
4. Begin a short and simple meditation practice.
Beginning a simple meditation practice is one of the simplest – and most rewarding – things you can bring into your daily activities. Choose a time of day, find a quiet place, and focus all your attention on your breath. You’ll create open and reflective space in your mind to let go of all the thoughts that have been weighing you down and make room for the fresh and uplifting thoughts you have for the season ahead.
5. Create a clean slate in your home.
Spring is the season that we all think of when it comes to cleanliness – and for good reason. Dusting, scrubbing, and clearing out the clutter is not only good for our happiness and productivity, but it’s also a huge benefit to getting rid of germs that might be hiding in your home and combating sickness that so often comes up in the spring months. Don’t be afraid to get dirty and really clean your home top to bottom – it might be the only time all year those corners and crevices get any attention.
Take some time to refresh your health and you’ll reap the benefits of a healthy body, mind and home all season long!
