It just happened. The moment you have been waiting and planning for has come to fruition. You just said “I do” to the person you plan on spending the rest of your life with, and now you want to capture this moment forever. You find the perfect setting, the perfect lighting; the two of you get into position, and with creative flourish, ruin the most expensive piece of clothing you have ever owned…Wait, what? At least that was my initial reaction. This new trend called “trash the dress” is a type of wedding photography. Instead of preserving the dress like many brides do, these brides have chosen a different approach. If you look up “trash the dress” online, I can guarantee the majority of the images will be of a bride in a lovely gown, standing or lying in the ocean, a river, or a lake. Another popular set up is spraying or throwing paint. The intent is to, as is obvious by the name of the trend, “trash the dress”. Although gorgeous, they are no longer original, and for such a new fad, that is quite surprising. If you want to destroy one of the most expensive parts of your wedding, why not get creative with it? So without further ado, I will list five unique ideas for a “trash the dress” photo session below.
5. Make a Wish
Although the water themed sessions are a bit overdone, a unique twist on it would be a water fight in a public fountain. The bride and spouse get to run around splashing each other, resulting in a super fun session. I highly recommend contacting the local City Hall to make sure you aren’t breaking any laws by using a city fountain. Better to be safe than sorry. Other than that, a change of clothes and towels would be a good idea to bring.
4. Ring the Bell
Amusement park or carnival games and rides offer many opportunities for fun-filled photos. This session can have shots of just the bride, or both spouses. Before you march into the place, make sure you inquire about safety precautions. Things like clothing getting caught in machine parts could be potentially dangerous. Other than that, just have a great time!
3. Damsel in Distress
Recreating the cliché “damsel in distress” scenario is quite easy. You can use a large tree or old train tracks to tie the bride to. To make the photos even more fun, the spouse could go with the cliché hero or put on a curled mustache and top hat for that “villain” look. Various silly poses that are over exaggerated, like classic “damsel in distress” skits, make this one of the cheesier sessions, but fun nonetheless.
2. Cinderella Style
This idea has the worst outcome for the dress out of the five I’m listing. There will need to be two bridesmaids, or any two people of choice, to reenact a Cinderella-esque scene. Remember when the two evil step sisters tore her pink dress to shreds? Well, it doesn’t have to be quite as violent, but as long as the bride is okay with her dress being ripped to pieces, just go with it.
1. Epic Food Fight
My favorite of the five I’ve listed would have to be this one. Boy is it the messiest though. A food fight of epic proportions will require you to “mess-proof” the area you plan on doing this in. Consult with photographers to find one that can do this in their studio if you don’t want to do this at home. You will definitely need a change of clothes, preceded by a shower for this session, so planning to do this at home might be best.
