Finally, the weekend is here and you have time to do all the things you’ve been waiting to do all week–in Azeroth.
The scope of World of Warcraft is so enormous that you may need a real paper list to keep track of everything to do during “offtime,” when your character isn’t obligated to be grouped with friends for leveling, raiding, battlegrounds or arenas.
While those headliner activities are in themselves a huge draw and necessary for your character’s progression, it’s the little things you do while not fighting that make Azeroth feel like a real home for your hero. WoW is more beautiful and complex than ever, and one of the main reasons people are willing to pay a monthly subscription to return year after year is that there is never an end to the variety of things to do, people to meet, and places to visit.
To illustrate the variety of things your character could be doing should they decide to take some time off from killing enemies, here are five worthwhile things you can do in Azeroth without spilling a single drop of pixelated blood:
Holiday Events The recent addition of an in-game calendar ensures that you will always know when a “holiday” is coming up. There are so many holidays in-game that sometimes they even overlap. Holiday activities often include collection or traveling quests and the ability to purchase cosmetic items like bunny ears for “Noblegarden” (Easter) or pumpkin head hats for “Hallow’s End” (Halloween). While you can participate in holidays without killing anything, they’re even better if you do, since killing special holiday bosses often yields useful gear upgrades. You can even kill the “Greench” during Feast of Winter Veil (he’s a mean one.)
Transmogrification With the advent of transmogrification, old items in WoW have become much more interesting. Since you can overlay the appearance of a less powerful item onto your current gear, Azeroth has become much more fashion-conscious. Your character can achieve a look that is formidable, beautiful, and cohesive using old nostalgic tier sets, quirky pieces scoured from the auction house, or items earned from quests. Now that your character can adopt the look of almost any item of the same armor class, you could spend hours skimming the auction house for just the right shoulders to go with your breastplate. Try putting together a set using items bearing the same name, or building your own set starting with one favorite item.
Have a race Several guilds have put together naked gnome races, in which groups of friends create level one gnomes at the same time and race them to a predetermined point in Azeroth. Try grabbing a few of your friends and racing your own scantily clad lowbies. You’ll have silly fun, and you’ll be so glad to see your stronger characters after any deadly run-ins you have with level five spiders!
Pet Battles Your character can now collect, name, and train any vanity pets in your collection to fight other pets and critters all over the map. You can choose to battle your friends, random players, or animals of the world. The pet battle menu has an explanation of how to get started. Once your pets are leveled up enough, you can use them to battle and collect even more rare pets, making your friends exceedingly jealous. Pick a team of three pets you like, name them, and begin! Pets are now even shared across all of your characters.
Explore When developers created Pandaria, the goal was to create a new land that was as beautiful as it was epic. It really is breathtaking both in its atmosphere and intricate detail. Visit villages, look in buildings, and marvel at the detail that went into creating such an exquisite new continent. While you’re at it, track your “World Explorer” achievement as you fill in your map. When you’re done with Pandaria, go have a closer look at the older continents. Since Cataclysm, a lot has changed, and even someone who spends hours online is likely find something they didn’t notice before about the world they thought they knew. There is also a lot of very rich lore in WoW, so if you run into a non-player character that looks interesting and has a name, take it to the Internet and see if you can find their story.
You paid your subscription, so get everything you can out of it! Even heroes do better work after a break from routine. As the Pandaren say, “slow down.”
