Whenever my living room or front room needs a quick and easy refresh, one of my money saving strategies is to shift around the rugs in my home. Moving around the rugs is a terrific way to change the look of a living room without having to spend oodles of money. Here are 5 ways that I make this simple idea work for me.
As a way to change the “temperature” of a room
My front room is a boring sand color which is just a little too cool for my liking during the winter months. To introduce some warmth into the room that will keep us cozy until spring, I’ll bring in a colorful 7 x 10 area rug from a guest room and toss matching pillows on the furniture to make the room look warm and inviting.
To create intimate seating areas
A large living room makes a great gathering area for cocktail parties and dances, but doesn’t work at all intimate conversations. During the winter when most of our entertaining is indoors, I’ll rotate the rugs and move the furniture slightly to create several small seating areas where guests can visit quietly without having to yell across the room.
To change the room dimension
Just like stripes will make a room look taller, a rug can also make a room look wider or longer. During the summer when my living room does double duty as a hallway, I’ll orient the rugs “end-to-end” to make the room look long and slender. In the fall, the rugs are reoriented “side-to-side” which makes the room look more like a living room instead of an over sized hall.
As a way to showcase interesting furniture
I love using small scatter rugs in both my living and front rooms to direct the eyes towards an interesting piece of furniture. A small rug will pull the eyes along a certain direction which changes the appearance of the room while also calling attention to any furniture or artwork in its path.
For a change of color
None of the rugs in my house are remotely the same color which makes it super easy for me to change a room color simply by shifting around the rugs. At the moment, forest green is the predominant color in our living room thanks to a generously sized dark rug. That will all change this summer when I’ll bring up a vintage rose and baby blue floral rug from the basement to freshen up this room with a breezy Victorian vibe.
Changing the look of a living room is easy to do with just a switch of the rugs and moving a couple of pieces of furniture. For many homes, this is all it takes to refresh a living room without having to spend any money.
