It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the beauty products on the market. No matter what it is, marketers always make us feel like we need everything! Everything is “revolutionary” or a “must have”. It can sometimes go overboard.
I put time (and money) into my looks, and amazingly, the things that keep you the most beautiful are the simplest items. Of course, it all starts with a good skincare regimen, but a secret you may not know is that a “regimen” can be one single product that you use every day. My grandmother had absolutely gorgeous skin, and it was all because she was committed to this facial soap called Ultra Glow. She used it practically all her adult life, and it showed. Her face was always glowing. Even after she died, she had a beautiful glow to her skin.
They still make this facial soap as well as others. Nowadays the game changing facial essentials are not soaps–it’s the face creams. The cool thing about creams is that they remain on the skin, and not to be washed off like soaps are. Creams have all kinds of properties, and as tempted as you may be to search for the most powerful “anti aging” cream you can find, the key is to find a cream that simply moisturizes your skin really well. A rich moisturizer can fight aging over time. But you must use it regularly and for an extended period of time, just like my grandma did with her Ultra Glow. So essential #1 is a great face cream.
Many of us have those areas on our face that are a little darker than the rest. It can be dark circles, freckles, dark spots, redness, you name it. Whenever you are applying your makeup, you may notice that these areas still peek out from beneath your foundation. Of course, you could opt for a full coverage foundation, but that will add more coverage on areas that may not need it. So the best option would be to get essential #2, a concealer. A concealer should be one shade lighter than your skin if you are wearing a foundation, and the same color as your skin if you are wearing no foundation or just a light dusting of powder. Apply your concealer with a concealer brush for the under eye area. You can use your finger, but a brush is more precise. A lip brush can give great application on small spots.
Maintaining a healthy glow leads us to essential #3, a natural blush. What I love about blushes is that they instantly transform your look, especially if you’re wearing full makeup. Sometimes a blush is all you need to make your makeup look realistic. Foundation can look too heavy, and a little blush can give you that touch of color that awakens your face. Blush can easily be overdone, but with the right shade and the right formula, it can be a life saver. Choose a color that blends well into your skin, but still leaves just enough color on the surface. A blush stick is great for a dewy finish, and a powder blush for a soft “doll-like” finish.
A wonderful way to make your eyes stand out is to A) to load on the mascara, or to B) dust on a shimmering eye shadow. Even though mascara is known for giving us that “wide eyed” look, a shimmering eye shadow can do the same thing, but also give you a slightly glam look. It makes your eyes twinkle, and it’s a quick way to dress up your face if you don’t have time for the whole beauty regimen. Take an eye shadow brush and blend the color onto your eye lids. You will see that a thinner to medium coat of shimmering eye shadow showcases the shimmer particles more than a heavy application would. Shimmer eye shadows are becoming more casual, and matte eye shadows more for the evening, so don’t be afraid to wear shimmer in the day. Beauty essential #4 is a shimmering eye shadow.
Don’t let anyone fool you–high-shine lip gloss is not out of style! You don’t see too many women wearing super shiny glosses anymore, but they can be worn very tastefully. A high-shine gloss can be used the same way we use a topcoat for our nails. The top coat doesn’t just add a shine, but it also smoothes out some glitches, and it makes the color lasts longer. Shiny lip glosses does the same thing! You don’t have to load it on until it’s dripping off (like I used to do in high school), but adding some gloss can make your lips look luscious and smooth–even plumper. Essential #5 is a shiny lip gloss.
Lastly, a signature lipstick is essential #6. It’s a must for every woman. We all need that one shade of lipstick that will never fail us. This is our go-to lipstick in those moments when we are in a rush and don’t have time to (or just don’t want to) go through the 12 step beauty program. Find that shade of lipstick that you are addicted to, season in and season out. My shade is a deep purple. All I have to do is add my eye brow pencil, put on some face powder and my plum lipstick and I’m all set. No other color in my beauty bag is as easy for me to throw on and go as this color. Every woman would have their own shade, but make sure the shade is literally a color that seems to transform your look every time you wear it.
