We as Americans have such an opportunity, in that we have the ability to be anything we want to be. We control our own destiny. As I travel around this great Country of ours and talk to folks, I sense that a lot of people have let go of the notion of “The American Dream”. I am here to tell you that no matter what your current situation, you control your destiny in life, you can truly be anything you want to be! Achieving your dreams does not come easy, it takes hard work and sacrifice, but the sense of pride you have once accomplishing something is beyond description.
Did you know: Oprah was fired from her job as a reporter because she was “unfit for TV”? Steven Spielberg was rejected from film school three times? Mark Cuban went through several service jobs he was terrible at? and Walt Disney was fired by a news editor because he said he lacked imagination? The only thing that separates them from everyone else is, THEY NEVER GAVE UP. I encourage everyone to never give up on your dreams. Yes, we may have to take jobs in between that we don’t like, but never stop doing what you love because someone tells you it will never work, or that you are chasing a hopeless dream.
I started in the music business on the road doing tour management. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it could possibly be the most stressful, under-appreciated job in the music business. However, I knew that it would be a start in the the music industry, and would help me later in life in reaching for my goals. While taking different roles in the music industry with little to no pay, I was confronted by family and friends that told me that I could never make a real income doing this, and that I need to grow up and stop chasing my dreams. If I heard, “Don’t you think it’s time to grow up and get a real job” one more time, I might have snapped.
While it hurt to hear that at the time from people I loved, it gave me motivation. It wasn’t just about me anymore, I wanted to show everyone who doubted that it can be done, no matter who you are. I didn’t want to do this to rub it in peoples faces, but in hopes that it encourages them to chase their dreams as well. I couldn’t image a life where I would be content to go to a job I hate everyday without having something in between that I am passionate about. I have not reached all of the goals that I set out, and honestly, who knows if I ever will. But I know with certainty that when I am old, I will look back and know that I put every ounce of my heart and soul into something that I was passionate about to make it work.
We will never know if we don’t try. Please try, it has given me something beyond what words can describe to work towards and be proud of whatever I end up accomplishing. Go create something wonderful, love first, give the benefit of the doubt, trust God’s plan for you, and I think that this world will be a better place to live!
