As an experienced print model, I have attended several “fitness/athletic” castings over the years, and truthfully, haven’t booked many of them. I’m either too muscular or simply don’t have the look they’ve needed at the time. There is a lot of ambiguity in the fitness market, and a wide range of physiques are used in the advertising. Think outside the box and discover ways to make your fitness modeling dreams a reality.
Be Your Own Best Client. Be a fitness model for your own marketing purposes. Are you an independent business owner, personal trainer, dance, yoga, or fitness instructor? As a fitness expert with a growing social media audience, I use my own images for promotional use. Being the fitness model featured in my website, articles, tweets, and other content has been invaluable. Have a photo shoot of your own and find creative ways to use the photos in networking and business opportunities. My fitness shots are an integral part of my work and appreciated by my clients and readers. By creatively and purposefully using my own pictures, I’ve been able to accomplish my goal of being a fitness model. I may not get a paycheck for the photo-shoots, but the return on this investment can’t be quantified.
Fitness Modeling Agencies Are Rare, at Best. In the six years that I have been a print model, I have personally never heard of an agency that exclusively represents fitness models. This doesn’t mean that they don’t exist, but I have done extensive research on this topic (due to my own personal interest) and I haven’t come across one. I found an agency in Chicago which had a division for fitness models and athletes. I recently went online to make an inquiry via their website and found that it has since been dissolved. There’s simply not enough work available to support the need for an exclusive fitness division. Contact local businesses that might use models or athletes in their advertisements (pool and spa stores, for example), find out who is in charge of marketing, and ask them where they find the models featured in their ads. Submit your photos to these print agencies.
Enter contests and compete in shows. Proud of all the hard work you’ve put in over the years and want to show it off? This is understandable; you’ve earned it! Submit your photo to online bikini contests etc. Several magazines, such as Oxygen, feature pictorials of fitness model hopefuls. There are also many promotional modeling opportunities that require fit models (bikini girls at auto shows and sporting events, for example). Also, enter bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitions, or pageants. Good luck!
