“Do not pretend to know me,” declared the man, as he looked deeply into the mirror.
Deception had moved in like a dark cloud, confusing the man’s mind. His reflection had now taken a life of its own.
“Your are not the man you used to be,” argued the reflection, with eyes that burned deep inside the man’s soul.
The man began pounding his fists upon the counter, thinking he had gone mad! His reflection in the mirror was speaking to him and this surely could not be.
“Do you dare to mock me? This gray upon my head did not come by chance but by toil and trouble,” shouted the man at his reflection.
The two locked eyes. It was now a standoff. The man and his reflection were like statues, staring down one another as if they had something to prove.
Gritting his teeth, the man leaned into the mirror and whispered angrily at his reflection.
“What do you want from me?”
The reflection pleaded the fifth and closed his eyes. For a brief moment, the man was encapsulated in total darkness. He could feel his heart beat within his chest. He was scared as he thought death had finally come to call.
As quickly as darkness came, light came to be when the reflection opened his eyes, causing the man to see once again. The man felt such relief to know he was not dead but alive.
“Please tell me what to do!” The man begged to the reflection in the mirror.
“I want you to be happy,” said the reflection gently, “but more than that, I want you to be courageous and take a stand for what is important in life.”
The man scratched his head in amazement, feeling slightly perplexed. Nothing had ever been presented to him with such simplicity.
“Are you sure that is all you expect from me?” The man asked tearfully.
The man was shocked at the reflections response. For so long he thought he had to climb the highest of mountains, obtain the most riches, and make others like him. Years of believing, he was never good enough, simply was not true.
“How can I be happy?” The man asked, rubbing the mirror with his sleeve, attempting to make his reflection clearer.
The man wanted to make sure he could see clearly as now the reflection had the man’s full attention.
The reflection smiled and this made the man’s cheeks hurt. It had been years since a smile crossed his lips.
“Forgive yourself and then forgive others. It will be then you will find your happiness,” explained the reflection, “but most importantly, I want you to be the man you were called to be!”
The man put his head down, as he was not sure if he could do this. He had forgotten how to be courageous. Life had beaten him down hard. He was not sure if he had the strength anymore.
Looking up he saw himself looking back at him. In the mirror, he saw the man he used to be.
“I remember you!” The man said whispered.
Silence filled the room.
