A Wanted Man is another in the Jack Reacher saga. Jack Reacher is a vagabond who is a West Point graduate and former Major in the US Army Military Police. He is separated from the military service and wanders the country hitchhiking or begging rides. He is continually falling into scrapes and criminal escapades where he has to use his skill, training and experience to aid local, state and federal officials solve crimes.
In this instance, on his way to Virginia in rural Nebraska, he hitches a ride with three seemingly normal people. This ride with two men and a woman plunges him into a local murder and involvement with the sheriff, the FBI, the CIA and the US State Department.
Near a small town in Nebraska, three men enter a bunker and only two emerge. The third man is found stabbed to death. This sets off a statewide alert with road blocks and a BOLO (Be on the lookout) for two men in a red Mazada. The red Mazada is found abandoned and a local cocktail waitress and her car are missing. The FBI is called in because the murderers and kidnappers have apparently crossed state lines.
Much later, Reacher discovers that he has been picked up by the murderers and their hostage, the cocktail waitress. Eventually all this proves to be bogus since one of the men is an FBI agent and the cocktail waitress is also an undercover FBI agent. None of this is known to local law enforcement agencies as the FBI agents are working on a case related to national security which is highly classified. The incident creates panic at FBI Headquarters in Washington as well as the CIA and State Department.
Reacher senses that he has somehow stumbled into some big federal operation which no one wants to talk about. He has been accused of being involved in the plot and for self-preservation, Reacher injects himself into the investigation and eventually is the catalyst that unravels the whole scheme. There is lots of shooting and people die on both sides of the law.
As it turns out, a group of home grown terrorists have cooperated with foreigners to establish a system for financing terrorists both in the US and abroad. They have been using electronic techniques to raise and transfer money to avoid discovery.
In the end, Reacher is absolved of any involvement in the scheme and continues his journey to Virginia.
This is a very suspense filled novel. As you read, you wonder who these people really are, what are they up to and who is lying to whom? A Wanted Man will keep you up nigh
