Paul Carafotes is an actor that moved from Boston to Hollywood back in the 1980’s. He has been the bad guy, the good guy and every guy in between for years. He has worked with Tom Cruise in All The Right Moves and he has guest starred on more than several TV shows such as Castle, The Cape, ER, CSI, Without a Trace, The District, Chicago Hope, NYPD Blue, and Martial Law. He was a regular for a few years on Knots Landing and he had recurring roles on Bouncers and Damages.
This man has even more great film and stage roles in his resume but this article is about him becoming an author. Paul has written a children’s book inspired by the birth of his son and the name of the book is, “The Adventures of Charlie Bubbles. Charlie Bubbles is an adorable little guy that travels around in bubbles.
I had a great conversation with Paul the other day and this is what he had to say:
Q So you are from Boston, I am sure the Marathon Bombing must have been quite a hard thing to hear about?
A I was in Boston the week before with my son. I have been living in LA for 30 years. My son is five and he was the inspiration for The Adventures of Charlie Bubbles, he is a Boston fan and he loves the Red Sox. He is a baseball player and he is constantly on the Ipad watching the replay shows so I take him to Fenway as much as I can. We went for opening day and we were there for a week and we did a bunch of school stuff and we read to the kids and then of course we came back home to LA. Now my brother has season tickets and was at Fenway on Patriot’s Day with his sons and he traditionally goes to the finish line.
My mother has been sick and she has been in the hospital and my brother instead of going to the finish line this year, he took the kids to the hospital to see their Grandmother or they would have been at the finish line. As the details of this insanity came out I wanted to do something. So I contacted a bunch of celebrities here like James Gandolfini, Joe Mantegna and others. We decided what we would do because the message of Charlie Bubbles is to be helpful, loving and kind so I thought what a great thing, maybe we can do something nice like I can go and sing the Charlie Bubbles song to the kids in hospitals and schools and interact and it’s a lot of fun and it’s a great message.
I am going to go back to Boston in June and kick off the Bubble of Love Tour. I am going to visit all these kids in all these hospitals and schools and all these books have been donated so I am going to be able to give away a lot of books and that’s what’s happening with the book.
Q Did you say the Bubble of Love Tour?
A Yes, we are going to go around and donate these books so yeah, The Bubble of Love Tour.
Q That is absolutely adorable. I love it.
A It’s the Bubble of Love Tour and that is exactly what we are calling it.
Q You were inspired by the birth of your son. Is Charlie your son’s name?
A Yes, it is his name. It’s his grandfather’s name. His name is Charlie and I used to blow bubbles off my tongue you see when I was in Junior High I would daydream about Hollywood and all kinds of things and I blew these bubbles. When he was a baby and he would lie on my chest I would blow these bubbles and that is the first thing he got excited by. He would move his little tiny arms to try and grab the bubbles and his eyes lit up. So I thought to myself wow, he is connected to the bubbles somehow.
Q And then what if he could get inside the bubble and travel around hah?
A That’s what happened and I said wow, what if he could get in a big enough bubble that could take him on this magical mystery adventure where he would meet these animals and they could figure out how to overcome their problems which would be fear and other things.
Q Not only that but doesn’t the bubble also protect him as well?
A Yes, the bubble is a sanctuary, you know he gets to fly around which is a wonderful thing. He needs the help of whatever characters he meets along the way to get him back up and get him home. So it’s one of those things that it is like they become his friends. The story always has to do with him making friends. The Bubble of Love Tour is the same thing. My friends have banded together to help in Boston to bring a little love, Bubble of Love to everybody. It’s along the same lines in the story.
The bubble makes everybody smile. When he blows they are all under his bubble of love spell. The thing about Charlie Bubbles is it is good for the whole family. It took me almost five years to write the book.
Well Paul, it was well worth the wait and I can’t wait for the next book to come out. Everybody needs to make sure that they visit the Charlie Bubbles website at: http://www.charliebubblesbook.com. You can purchase the book directly from the website or at Amazon at: http://amzn.com/1480263346
