So after trying for two days, I’m still not able to log onto the marketplace to see my options for insurance in Tennessee. I pay $400 a month currently for private insurance, this insurance covers me and my two children. I don’t know if the marketplace is even going to be an option for me, so I’m anxious to see what they are offering. I’ve been on the page that says wait and I’ve waited for a little over 6 hours though and haven’t gotten anywhere as of yet.
I will tell you my situation though. I am 36-year-old, healthy person. I am not married, but I live with my fiance, he gets his insurance via his employer. I have a daughter from a prior marriage. She is 8. I also have a son who is 2.
I previously worked for a company where I could stay home and do marketing from home. Sort of ironically, health insurance issues closed the company. The owner of the company who was uninsured found out he had cancer on his bone. He used the company funds that funded my pay to get cancer treatment and that unfunded the company. I was laid off.
I now get unemployment, but I also don’t want to work outside the home. We can’t really afford childcare, so my working outside wouldn’t be cost effective. I would be giving the majority of my pay away and keeping very small portion. For this reason, I’m trying to get into freelancing and doing bookkeeping type assignments. I’ve been having success on this front. I am allowed to make a certain amount of income without it affecting the unemployment payments (which I use to buy health insurance). If I make above that amount, the difference will be subtracted from my payment.
I will for the first time make above that limit next week.
So, for all these reason, my income estimation is a really hard thing to accomplish. I have no idea how successful I will be next year. I hope that things will go as they are now and keep growing if that is the case. There is a chance that I will be very successful. I will however by most calculations be below the 138% of the poverty level if you count both my kids as dependents. I won’t be under the poverty level if you would just include my one child though. I have always had both children on health insurance with me though and would like to continue that.
Tennessee has not expanded Medicaid yet. I would not worry about insurance if they had because I know I would have coverage. I’m very worried right now though because I’m that person that could very well fall into the gap between using the MarketPlace and not using the MarketPlace. This is because if I don’t make enough money, I won’t qualify for a subsidy as dictated by the new Affordable Care Act. I will be placed in the Medicaid line, but then when I get to the desk for my options and I won’t have any. The private insurance that I have will be available, but they are required to add coverage that I don’t currently have. That will make the premiums higher and I can’t afford a penny more than I currently am paying on my unstable income.
So, as I anxiously wait for the ability to get into the Healthcare.gov website. This is where I stand, I’m sort of stuck at a crossroad wondering which way the prize wheel will land for my family.
