Album Review: Maria Has Lost Her Soul by Rimbombante

by fat vox

The easy listening attire of Rimbombante’s new recording Maria Has Lost Her Soul stokes the flames of candlelight ambiences and festive romps. Helmed by saxophonist Dean Pallen, Rimbombante is an assortment of Latin musicians who bring their individual style to the table. Together, the septet makes music that transcends generational gaps and crosses over genre lines.

The rumba base of “Diego Saurez” is bolstered by the willowy ruffles of the rhythm section with Arien Villegas on drums and Gerg Horvath on standup bass. Evandra Gracelli’s guitar envelopes the track in the pastoral sounds of serenity catapulting sprigs of sensual curves along the melody. The coasting tremors of Salomon Carillo’s percussion in “Canta Me” are garnished in lush saxophone riffs which are elevated to a party atmosphere along “Get Happy” as Carlos Santana’s keys accentuate the pumping action of the drums. The island sway of the drums in “Rimbombante” transforms into a slow thumping along “Redemption” pouched by glistening keys that chisel a choir of soft burning embers.

The moonlight glow of the saxophone in “Ella a la Playa” is augmented by the island vibe of the rhythm section molding sprinting beats along “I Would Never Let You Fall” torched by bubbly guitar chords. The fluid movement of the instrumentation in the title track displays a graceful swagger which then pervades a romantic mood in the final track “21 Extra Days of Summer” as Craig Pederson’s trumpet beads the track in elegant trimmings resonating an easy listening vibration.

Rimbombante adapted their namesake from the Spanish term which means something flamboyant, gregarious, or having a strong resonance which is a definition that the ensemble strove to depict in their music. Maria Has Lost Her Soul is the follow up to their 2008 debut album Una Aventura Mas. Their sound encompasses a broad range of Latin, jazz, and world music influences creating a hybrid that straddles multiple cultures and shows universal magnetism.
