Arrow is back with its second season which is currently airing on the CW network. After watching the first two episodes of the second season of Arrow, I must say that I like how things are going so far. I’m going to say that there are some minor spoilers in the article, so proceed at your own risk!
New characters, new villains, and a brand new name!
First off, I really liked that the show didn’t jump ahead several years or months like other shows do. Arrow Season 2 more or less picked up where the last season left off and kept all of the unresolved issues in place. I thought it was really cool how the writers made Oliver a murderer in season one, but made him realize how that was wrong and find another way to go about saving the city for the second season. The transition was actually pretty smooth and made sense why and how he came to make that decision. It is like they are giving us a look at how he becomes the hero in DC comics and the journey he takes to get there instead of taking the more violent vigilante path that they had going in the first season. In other words, this could be a really good live action origin story for Arrow to show how he became what he is instead of it just being a bad TV adaptation of a superhero.
Speaking of journeys, I love his past adventures on the island!
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better they threw in some more action to keep his five year journey on the island exciting. Who are these new guys on the island and what are they looking for?
I like how they are also showing Roy Harper’s journey of becoming Speedy/Red Arrow as well, maybe his girlfriend will take her childhood nickname and give it to him? I think that could actually make sense.
The storyline with Queen Consolidated and Oliver Queen’s mother going to prison was also a nice way to flush out the story a bit more because it gives Oliver more to worry about than just being a superhero, he still has a family and everyday life that he has to juggle as well, and I like how they tied it all together for an overall plot device. His image as Olivier Queen is now just as corrupt as his vigilante hero image. I love how the writers are showing both sides of his life and how Oliver Queen is trying to change the image of both of his identities to help make the city a better place.
The first episode also hinted at a new name, could it be “Green Arrow”, or how about “The Emerald Archer”? But to be honest, whatever he goes with it is going to be way better than the “Hood guy” nickname from season 1.
The first episode also revealed a new hero that looks a lot like Black Canary, could it be Laurel in disguise? That would be pretty cool, but it wouldn’t really make sense how she went from a lawyer to a superhero in such a short time. Maybe it is her missing sister that was presumably dead?
Although, we have also seen Laurel use firearms and hand to hand melee combat several times throughout the course of the show, so either way it really comes down to how the writers flush out her side of the story. I guess we’ll have to tune in to find out why Black Canary puts the costume on.
The acting in the first episode of season 2 was actually pretty good, and I also loved the fight scenes. Perhaps I just got used to a lot of the flaws that bothered me from Arrow season 1 and just learned to accept it as being apart of the show. I do wish that some of the fight scenes didn’t jump and click around so much so that we could see what the actors were doing a bit more, and there was one small part that bothered me near the end of the first episode where it looked like Oliver took cover behind a piece of clear plastic sheeting that was hanging from some scaffolding to dodge some bullets, but other than that I thought the first few episodes were actually pretty good.
I can see this being a great new season with a lot of really awesome story elements. The way they have been building up Green Arrow’s origin story is pretty good so far, so I hope they continue to listen to the fans to make this an amazing new season and continue to fix the minor flaws holding the TV show back, but overall I really like the path Arrow season 2 is taking so far.
