As many Atlanta Braves fans know, the team is likely to acquire some knew players as the 2013 season unfolds.
Let’s take a look at some of the top prospects out there right now:
1. Julio Teheran, RH Pitcher
Many know that Tommy Hanson and Randall Delgado left the Braves as a result of offseason trades. The departure of these pitchers means that there will likely be room for Teheran. According to Mike Rosenbaum, Teheran entered the 2012 season as a lead pitching prospect. Ultimately, it seems that his outstanding arm speed (91-95 mph) and the fact that he pitched well in the Dominican Winter League make him the best thing the Braves could have going this year.
2. J.R. Graham, RH Pitcher
In sizing Graham up, Rosenbaum notes that Graham was excellent in his first full pro season at both High-A and Double-A. Making his own assessments about the pitcher, Thomas Belmont references Graham’s impressive debut record of striking out 22.9% as proof of the ballplayer’s stature. With these references in mind, it looks like Graham is right behind Teheran as a lead prospect for 2013.
3. Lucas Sims, RH Pitcher
As many sports enthusiasts know, Sims pitches in the 90-93 mph range. Moreover, reports indicate that he may have gotten up to 95-97 mph. Additionally, Sims is on his way to minor league spring training where his skills will be further honed and refined this year. All of these factors add up towards making Sims one of the strongest prospects for the Braves this year.
4. Christian Bethancourt, Catcher
In making his assessments about Bethancourt, Rosenbaum stated that his “rocket arm” probably increases the likelihood that he will be a good defensive catcher. Additionally, Bethancourt has thrown out 38% of base-stealers over five minor league seasons. These stats suggest that he would be a good addition to the Braves this year.
5. Sean Gilmartin, LH Pitcher
Part of Gilmartin’s appeal is that he reached Triple A in just over a year of his debut. Additionally, Gilmartin’s fastball is delivered at 88-91 mph. In describing his pitching, Rosenbaum says it is marked by an “effortless delivery.”
While one can only speculate about who the Braves will acquire this season, the prospects listed above seem like their best bet!
