One of the reasons I like living in Los Angeles are the frequent awards shows our city hosts. Beyond the ceremonies themselves, award shows have expanded into entire festival-like weekends, with a series of parties and events surrounding the show itself. As I did, it’s possible to attend a bunch of fun parties and events without ever attending the actual award show.
The BET Awards
Los Angeles recently played host to the BET Awards and aside from the award show broadcast, there was an entire music festival, the BET Experience Weekend. The BET Experience Weekend featured some big celebrity performances from artists like Beyonce and Snoop Lion (the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg).
As part of the big 2013 BET Experience Weekend, reality TV star Erica Mena, from VH1’s “Love and Hip Hop New York”, hosted the Eye on Glam Beauty Lounge and Day Party. I attended the event and really had a fun time. While many of the glamorous guests may have been there to get primped and primed for the award show, other people like me just had a fun afternoon mixing and mingling.
Aside from an afternoon of fun and beauty, it was all for a good cause, benefiting the California Autism Foundation. Tastemaking Los Angeles publicists Dana Fikes of the D Network PR and Anje Collins of the Luxe PR Group were the brains and beauty behind the event, Lady J Cosmetics provided the glamour tools and Izma Models provided some lovely ladies.
Beauty & Fun
The event provided an opportunity for female award BET Awards attendees to get glam-ed up before the show, with hair and make-up artists on-site. Massages were also available for guests who found the preparatory process stressful. The Eye on Glam Beauty Lounge and Day Party was also a gift suite, introducing some great brands and products to the influential attendees like Hulu Girl beverages and ScentSational Soaps. I had fun dancing to some great music and just enjoying the interesting group of attendees.
What is a gift suite?
The gift suite is also becoming a staple of the whole award show experience, these are parties or receptions where corporate brands pay for the opportunity to present their products to influential tastemakers. Attendees get to check out new products and leave with a goody bag of samples. Some award shows like the Oscars even feature lavish gifts for attendees like diamond jewelry and all-expense paid luxury vacation experiences.
A good cause
All the fun, food and beauty was for a good cause, the Eye on Glam Beauty Lounge and Day Party was a fundraiser for the California Autism Foundation. The foundation offers people with autism and other developmental disabilities tools to achieve “independence, productivity and fulfillment” according to the organization’s mission statement.
