If you are new at web design and you are designing your first website, there are some mistakes you should avoid at all cost. Your web design can make or break your website. A bad web design will send people scrambling for the X on the tab. So take a look at the 10 things you need to avoid below when you are designing your website.
#1 – Fancy or Hard to Read Fonts
Some people like to get all fancy on their website and that includes using fancy font on their sites as well. You should avoid using fonts that are hard to read. If someone can’t read what is on your site just by glancing at it, they will move onto another site.
#2 – Hard to Navigate Site
Be careful and don’t make your website hard to navigate. Not everyone is experienced with using a computer and making navigation hard is a sure fire way to send them to the X on that tab. Make menus simple and self-explanatory.
#3 – Don’t Over Use the Flash
If you learned how to use Flash when you were learning web design, you may find that it is quite fascinating! However, don’t over use the Flash. For one, it can be quite irritating to look at. For two, it will slow the loading of your website which will make people close your site.
#4 – Hold Off on the Background Music
At one time, web designers went through a fad where they added background music to their sites. Hold off on the background music because it is very irritating, will slow the loading of your site, and doesn’t add anything to your site.
#5 – Don’t Use Bright Color Font
For goodness sakes don’t use the bright color fonts if you have a lot of text to read on your site. Having a clip of bright colored text to grab someone’s attention is fine, but having a whole page in bright colored text is a killer on the eyes.
#6 – Don’t Blend Your Links In with Text
One of the things you need to do is make your links visible. If your links are blended in with the text, the visitors won’t know where to click.
#7 – Avoid Using Mouse Animations
At one time, the mouse animations were cool and all, but that is so yesterday. That’s not the case today. They look childish, can slow your computer down, and they are very irritating.
#8 – Avoid Horizontal Scrolling
Please don’t design your site so that you have to scroll horizontally to read the stuff on your site. This is so irritating and will probably cause you to lose traffic.
#9 – Avoid 2 Mile Long Pages
Avoid making your webpages two miles long. No one wants to read a two mile long page. Break the page up into multiple pages if you have to, but don’t make it extremely long.
#10 – Avoid Marquees and Flashing Text
The marquees and flashing text is out also. So, don’t add these two things to your site. The flashing text can slow your site down and cause people a headache.
