Working From Home:
From outsourcing industries like elance and odesk to IT based services like IBM have flexible ‘work from home’ options that is absent in other conventional careers. Although this is a big bonus for people who don’t like working in cubicles, this creates another challenge that forces them to alter their life to balance work and life.
Work is only a part of life and not life itself. Nevertheless, work always has an important place in our lives. When we start working from home, we forget the need to take care of our personal life. This becomes an obsession. One must learn to balance life and work, and manage his or her time efficiently to manage the pressure of working from home.
- · Spending time with your family: Obsession with work creates a distance between you and your family if you don’t induce a positive change to overcome the stress of working from home.
- · Taking care of your health: People who work from home are mostly ignorant of their health and wellbeing. Problems like obesity, eye problems (because of over-exposure to computers) and psychological problems (because of high levels of work stress) are possible.
- · Social interaction: Ever since I took up freelancing, I almost forgot about my recreation activities like going out for a film with friends. People who work from home have less social interaction than people who work in office. This could become a serious problem if it continues for a longer period.
If you chose to work from home, then, you must adapt to this new challenge and make several changes in order to balance personal life and work.
The first lesson in working from home is to manage your time and work efficiently so that you could spend more time with our family. The ‘Work while you work, play while you play’ motto works best here. Learn to make schedules and stick to them firmly. Neatly divide working hours and make those hours productive each day.
Bad working habits like checking mail or Facebook every ten minutes must be avoided. This is exactly what I’m trying these days! Avoid distractions during working hours. In case you need help, ask. Delegate your work when necessary.
Make it a priority to spend time with family and friends. Go out and have some fresh air when you feel like it. Take mini-breaks to keep your head stress free.
Working from home is a great way to earn these days. New freelancers find it difficult to manage work and family. So, make the changes necessary. Adapt and live happily!
