I don’t drive in Bangkok, but have plenty of friends that do. Many of them, however, if planning on drinking more than a beer or two, will meet at one of the bars near Bangkok’s MRT underground train system. That’s because it’s easy to get home when you’re a bit drunk without being stuck in a taxi in Bangkok’s horrendous traffic and, safety-wise, there’s no need to take your car.
If you too enjoy a couple of beers, a few whiskeys or some cocktails and don’t want to have to worry about driving home, taking a taxi back to your hotel, or walking too far when you’re a bit drunk, try some of these bars near Bangkok’s MRT underground train system. The beer is good, the atmosphere is great and the food, if they serve it, is excellent.
Cha Bar – A fun place to go to if you’re looking for somewhere where you can dance along with enjoying a few beers. Cha Bar is in northern Bangkok away from the tourist center so it’s an all-Thai crowd here. It has live music and great DJs every night that play mainly hip-hop and rap. The crowd that goes here tends to be quite young but, if you don’t mind that, they’re friendly and fun.
You’ll find Cha Bar close to the Khampaeng Phet MRT underground station. Just leave the station from Exit 1 and walk a couple of blocks up Pahonyothin Road.
Glow Nightclub – Don’t let the name fool you. Glow isn’t a nightclub per se, but a small bar that specializes in live music or music spun by Thai or international DJs. What’s great about Glow is you never know what type of music you’ll get on the night you go as they cover everything from reggae to rap, hip hop to ska, electro-pop to house. But, it’s also a laid-back bar where you can chill out, and great fun if you’re not in the mood for something frenetic.
You can get to Glow from the Sukhumvit MRT underground station, as they’re located on Sukhumvit Rd. Soi 23, Asok Soi Cowboy. Don’t go too early, though, as they don’t open until around 7pm and it doesn’t get lively until after 9pm. Find out how to get to Glow at their Foursquare page.
Wong’s Place – You’ll find Wong’s Place just a couple of blocks from the MRT underground, and if you’re looking for a late-night place, Wong’s is it. A dive bar that has been open for decades, it’s seedy and old but the crowd doesn’t seem to care. It’s also a fabulous place to go if you don’t want to hang around with tourists as you’ll find nobody but Thais and long-term expats here. I’ve spent a fair few nights at Wong’s in my time and had a blast every time.
Wong’s is close to the Lumphini MRT underground train station at 27/3 Soi Sribamphen, Rama 4 Road. You can find out more about it here.
d Bar d Bistro – If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, d Bar d Bistro should hit the spot. It’s both a nightclub and a gastropub, so the food is amazing and the atmosphere is cool. d Bar d Bistro is split up into two sections, with the main dining area on the first floor and the bar upstairs. The menu is enormous with well over a hundred dishes to choose from — both European and Thai — and they’re known for their excellent cocktails. d Bar d Bistro is the perfect place if you don’t just want to drink your dinner but actually want to enjoy a superb meal as well.
Find out more about d Bar d Bistro at Bangkok’s City Net Events. It’s located just a couple of blocks from Lumphini MRT underground station, within walking distance of Wong’s.
