Kayaking is a great upper body workout that trains your arms, back, shoulders and chest while also providing cardiovascular benefits (Livestrong, 2011). Kayaking is an inexpensive way to get out on the water and enjoy the outdoors without breaking the bank. The best kayaks are aerodynamic, comfortable to sit in for extended periods and provide adequate balance Our list comprises the best non-ocean kayaks for under $400.
Perception Sport Rhythm 10 Kayak $399
As an avid fan of lake kayaking, I just purchased the Perception Sport Rhythm 10′ kayak myself. This particular model provides an aerodynamic hull, adjustable foot pedals, padded backrest and a storage hatch. While the kayak can hold larger builds up to 250 lbs., the narrow and long shape allow precision steering and speed. The larger sitting area is roomy enough to feel comfortable without feeling claustrophobic, but also provides stability while getting in and out of the vessel.
Manatee Deluxe Solo Kayak $399
The Manatee Deluxe Solo kayak makes our list for its long design, large open cockpit and seating comfort. The kayak provides padded seats and backrest, which makes it comfortable for multiple hours on a lake or pond without discomfort. The best part of the design is the open cockpit, which allows for adequate breathability and ease of dismounting the kayak in case of a tip over. The $399 asking price for this particular kayak allows for affordability and value.
Perception Sport Access 11.5 Kayak $399
The Perception Sport Access 11.5′ kayak is the perfect blend for the casual kayaker and weekend fishing hobbyist. The open platform allows for ease of movement to allow for more stable casting, while the 300 lb. capacity allows some extra gear to be held in the boat while still maintaining its balance. The kayak also features in molded rod holders to allow for the fishing pole to rest while you enjoy the water and outdoors.
Future Beach Spirit 120 Kayak $269.99
I’ve seen a lot of buzz with the inexpensive Future Beach kayak models. This particular kayak offers the perfect blend of comfort, maneuverability and style at a lower price point than the competition. The Future Beach Spirit 120 features graduated foot wells, excellent stable design, padded backrest and built in carry handles. This is a kayak for the beginner that plans on using the kayak for slow moving lakes and ponds. The only feature that I don’t like with this model is the 6″ storage compartment as the opening is to fit any larger items in the back, such as kayak wheels (allow easier transportation to the water way).
