Alright folks, I admit that I am a zombie movie fanatic. I have watched every zombie movie out there. From the Blockbuster big budget flicks to the ones made in someone’s basement. Like many of you out there, I prefer the more modern zombie movies. I’m not saying that the old zombie movies aren’t classics, but I’m a product of the color TV era. Something that I noticed is that there aren’t any good zombie movie lists on the internet. So with that said, I got with a small panel of fellow zombie enthusiasts and while we wait for the inevitable zombie apocalypse we rated the best zombie movies and put them together in this list. So here is what we came up with as the best zombie movies of modern times.
10. Land of the Dead – 2005
It’s only fitting that this list starts with a George A. Romero Film. In this film, Romero focuses on the post-apocalyptic world and the society that has formed after the zombies takeover. The cast includes academy award winner Dennis Hopper and Golden Globe nominee John Leguizamo and it’s the acting that takes this movie over the top.
9. Diary of the Dead -2007
It shouldn’t be a big surprise that Romero also has the second film on the best zombie movie list. Diary of the Dead takes the viewer into the minds of some colleges students on the run at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. I’m personally not a fan of the found footage format that is so popular in horror films these days, but this one has quite a few steady cam shots that make this movie watchable.
8. Resident Evil – 2002 to 2014
Our first entry on the list that is not a Romero movie is actually based on a video game. We included the entire series here as our 8th entry. The star of the series (Alice) starts at the outbreak of the plague caused by her former employer the Umbrella Corporation and the films continue to a point when humans are almost extinct.
7. ZombieLand -2009
I’m not of fan of the comedy-horror genre, but I’ve got to say that I was thoroughly entertained by this film. With star power like Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and an absolutely hilarious Woody Harrelson (not to mention Bill Murray in one of the best cameos ever) combined with a good post-zombie apocalypse script, this movie absolutely delivers.
6. The Crazies – 2010
A big budget and strong writing made this movie a hit amongst non-zombie fans. The residents of a small town begin to go absolutely bonkers after a chemical weapon is leaked in the town water supply. The government comes to clean things up and that when all hell breaks loose.
5. Devil’s Playground – 2010
This is probably the least known of all the movies on our list, but it’s certainly one of the better ones. A mercenary is on the search for a woman who may be a carrier of the cure for the zombie apocalypse. Devil’s playground has full slate action, suspense and drama and it’s a movie that any zombie enthusiast will love.
4. I Am Legend – 2007
And here comes the controversy. Many state that this is not zombie flick. Well what makes a zombie flick a zombie flick? The monsters used to be humans. Check. Humans are infected when bitten by the monsters. Check. The monsters eat the humans. Check. It sounds like this Will Smith big budget film meets all the criteria of a zombie movie to me.
3. 28 Days Later – 2002 and 28 Weeks Later – 2007
The second entry in our list from across the pond shows that the Brits know how to put together good zombie flicks. 28 Days Later stars Cilian Murphy and surrounds him waking up from a coma 28 days after the start of the zombie apocalypse. The second movie in the series takes place in London 28 weeks after the events in 28 Days Later.
2. Dawn of the Dead – 2004
Surprise! The master of zombie movies, George A. Romero comes in with another hit in this big budget remake of his original classic zombie epic. This was the first zombie movie that featured Ving Rhames, but it wouldn’t be the last. He must have really liked zombie movies because he also starred in Day of the Dead and Zombie Apocalypse. Dawn of the Dead grossed over $100 million dollars making it one of the most successful zombie movies ever.
1. Night of the Living Dead – 1968
Alright we admit that this isn’t a modern day film, but we consider this the movie that started it all. It was so well done that even HD era of movie watchers can sit through this one decades after its release. No surprise that this is also a product of the master of zombie movies and is a classic in any era. It also has one of the most memorable one liner’s in movie history. “They’re coming for you Barbara.”
Well this completes our list, but we unanimously agreed that this list would be incomplete without discussing the greatest addition to the zombie genre in history. AMC’s The Walking Dead has taken the genre to places we never thought possible on a small or big screen. The Walking Dead is a brilliant piece of television art that any zombie watcher would hold up as the Holy Grail of the zombie genre. The best thing about The Walking Dead is that we know there’ll be another episode next week and when the season ends we’re all like drug fiends awaiting our next fix of The Walking Dead.
