Today is Thanksgiving day and it is now 3:00 a.m. in the morning. I am up at this time because I want to get an early start and get to the Black Friday sales event. It is being held today instead of tomorrow and this is a great break for me. I won’t have to wait one more day to take in this exciting shopping experience. I always hit these sales the day after, not on the holiday itself. I put the bird into the oven and set the temp to 200 degrees to do an 8 hour slow bake. I wanted to do this so it would be done before 1:00 p.m. when my family and I would sit down to enjoy our Thanksgiving feast together today.
I hoped I would be able to get to the electronics department before the printers and ink cartridges were sold out this morning. This usually happens when an item people want badly enough sells out within the first hour or two of the doors opening and the sale starting. I hoped it wouldn’t happen to me. I had been waiting for this event all year and now it was here. I needed a new printer and I wanted the best I could find. It would be well worth the wait just to own one. I had found the flat screen television and the laser printer at our local Wal-Mart Supercenter here where I live.
If I could just get there early enough, find a parking place close enough, and possibly be maybe the 20th person in that long line of over zealous shoppers, I would be able to grab up my printer and enough ink cartridges for it and then make my way to the shelves of televisions where I could get my flat screen television and be out the door early. Yeah, right, I thought, just dreaming. I knew the odds of this happening were slim to nil but I was going to take my chances anyway. I had to!
Okay, it is now 3:30 a.m. and I am fully dressed in my warmest clothing and making my way out the door to brave this horrible, windy, bone-numbing cold. It is alright I tell myself. I have a full tank of gas, my purse and my keys and my credit card with lots of cash on it. I am ready to roll! I get in the car and put it in reverse and back out of my drive and hit the road to travel to the mall where the store that is having the Black Friday event I am going to is located. Only about 6 miles from my house. Great location for shopping and finding what you need at one place. I do this a lot, sometimes, weekly.
I arrive at the store and try to find a close parking place. None to be found so I have to take a place in the row next to the last in the parking lot. Great, I tell myself, nothing like walking a mile and a half to the front door. I know I am exaggerating but if you have been to one then you know how far you have to walk after you park just to join the others in that long line who have been waiting for quite a while before you arrive. I lock my car and start walking to the end of the line. My goodness when I see how long it is it seems to me like there are over a thousand people here this morning.
I take my place in line and there are still people arriving. I am having trouble trying to keep calm because I am so excited about being able to save so much money today and getting such good bargains here. I look at my watch and see it is now 4:00 a.m. and realize I still have to wait 3 more hours until they unlock the door and let us all in. I stand in line in the windy cold and to my sudden surprise the crowd begins to move. We finally reach the door and I am inside. I fight the urge to start pushing people out of my way so I can get to the electronics department. I wait and follow the people. I arrive at the electronics department and I see the 4 large bins of printers and ink cartridges. Lucky me! I wait until I can get near enough to the bin with my cart to get the printer and the ink cartridges. I do this and then proceed to the shelves of flat screen televisions.
I find the one I saw in the advertisement and I get it down and put it in my cart. I then turn around and start making my way slowly up the aisle. When I get to the check out lanes I am disappointed because I realize I have another 2 hour wait in front of me. It took me 2 hours just to get to the electronics department because this store is huge and there are so many people shopping this morning. We are all trying to get our purchases paid for and get out the door to go to more stores or just to go home with what we have found. I patiently wait in line with the other shoppers and I slowly make my way up to the cashier. I place my printer and cartridges on the counter and she rings them up. Next I start to lift the television out of my cart and she graciously tells me to leave it in and she scans the price tag on the carton.
Thank heavens for small miracles when you need one I always say and it seems like everything is going my way so far. Other than having to wait for a long time in line I don’t seem to be experiencing any major problems as of yet. Smooth sailing! I get out my credit card and I am so glad that I have more than enough on it to pay for my purchases this morning. I am a happy camper at last. I make my way out of the store and to my car. I have trouble getting the television into the trunk of my car but then I had already knew there was a possibility of that happening. After arranging a few things it slides into place and I close the trunk and get into my car and make my way homeward.
I arrive home at 11:00 a.m. just as I predicted that morning before leaving for the Black Friday sales event. I am met at the back door by my son who just happened to stop by to see if I was out or at home. He carried in my flat screen television for me and came back to get the printer and cartridges. This was so nice of him to do this for me but then he has always been this considerate, besides it was to heavy for me to carry inside by myself. Lucky for me he showed up when he did. I was so happy to be home inside my warm home and the smell of the roasted turkey was absolutely devine. It wouldn’t be long until my family and relatives would be arriving to eat so I took out the turkey and popped in the pies and the stuffing. Just as the hands on the clock both hit noon my family started arriving, bringing in their trademark dishes of food and other desserts.
We all sat down to a wonderful Thanksgiving feast at 1:00 p.m. as I had planned and I regaled my family with details of my Black Friday shopping trip. They don’t like to accompany me as I have in the past embarrased them greatly with my over zealous shopping behavior on occasions. I am truly sorry for their experience but let me tell you it didn’t bother me in the least as I was having so much fun shopping and getting the early bird bargains that I had so long awaited. I can’t wait to go again!
