Shortly after I began creating content for my blog (The Political Slant), I started implementing various blog marketing strategies so that I could build a following. Recently, I realized that I could market my blog more effectively if it had a high ranking in the search engines. This led me to conduct research regarding what I should do to increase my search engine ranking in order to market my blog to a larger audience. While there are a plethora of blog marketing strategies that can be implemented to make this happen, I think the following three strategies could be particularly helpful:
1. Optimize Your Blog For Your Target Audience.
In an attempt to provide individuals with the information they want when they conduct a search, the search engine looks for pages that are a tight fit for the data those people put in the search box. And many of the individuals typing information into the search engine are part of your target audience. To find the information that they want, these individuals might be typing in lexicon-type works that pertain to the subjects you cover in your blog. Thus, to rank higher in the search engines, you should make these words integral to your blog content. Once you do so, the search engine will work for you. In addition to choosing your wording based on the phrases your target audience uses, your website design and copywriting efforts should be optimized to appeal to these individuals. In order to get to the top of the search engines by attaining this information, SEO Consultant Jill Whalen suggests searching for studies online that offer demographic information about your target population. Additionally, she advises you to hang out in areas where members of your target audience will be and carefully consider the content of their conversation.
2. Research Keywords Thoroughly.
This principle ties into the one listed above. In short, your blog is probably already filled with content that is perfect for your target market. But if you aren’t using the same keyword phrases as them, the likelihood that you rise to to the top of the search engines so they can read your work is slim. For this reason, it is important that you use research tools like Wordtracker, Google’s Keyword Tool, and KeywordDiscovery to find the phrases that are being appropriated to attain information related to the content on your blog. Once you have attained this information, create lists of the most frequently used phrases that pertain to the type of content you are producing. Then sprinkle some of these words on every page of your blog.
3. Don’t Purchase A New Domain.
Search engines place great primacy on how long your domain and website have been in existence. Clearly, it is possible to buy a new domain and then include redirecting links from the old domain to the new one. However, this is not ideal. If you find that you do have to redesign your blog’s domain, be prepared to experience a substantive loss in traffic from search engines. Although it’s difficult to predict how long it will take for your search engine rankings to begin climbing, a rough estimate would be anywhere from several weeks to a few months. And it could take longer, so keep the same domain!
While it does take time to have your blog crawl up the search engine into a highly visible position, it is possible-especially if you’re systematic and intentional in your implementation of the blog marketing strategies listed above. Good luck! :)
