When working out, you should allow a day of rest after each day of strength training. This is what inspired me to buy a yoga workout video. On days between strength training, I could stretch and work on my balance. I chose Bob Harper’s “Yoga for the Warrior” because I wanted to burn calories as well, and this is supposed to be an intense workout.
NOTE: Consult your doctor before beginning any exercise.
As I mentioned above, you should allow a full day of rest after strength training to allow muscles to repair and strengthen, according to Pam Murphy of Livestrong.com. This just means to avoid strength training the same muscle group. This yoga workout is more stretching and aerobic than strength training.
Price. I paid under $10 for my copy of “Yoga for the Warrior” from Walmart. However, you can currently get this video from Bob Harper’s website, “My Trainer Bob” for $3.99. To purchase from his site, you have to spend at least $5 in merchandise, and there are shipping charges as well. You might also want to check your local library and see if they can get a copy of this DVD to see if you like it before you buy it.
Additional Equipment. Have you ever bought a workout video to find out you need equipment that wasn’t mentioned on the box? All you need for this workout is a yoga mat. I don’t have one, but my carpet is thick and soft. If your floor is hard, you will want a mat.
Skill Level. “Yoga for the Warrior” is from Bob Harper’s “Inside Out Method” and is good for most skill levels. Bob Harper has a modifier for beginners and those with less flexibility. There are a couple of advanced moves for those who are very flexible or experienced with yoga.
Bob Harper’s “Yoga for the Warrior”: The Workout. There are two workouts on this video: a one-hour full-body yoga workout, and a shorter, 15-minute abs workout. I did the one-hour workout, because I am trying to avoid strength training workouts on my alternate days. I have never done yoga before. Bob Harper uses many different yoga moves, but combines them to make an exercise workout that definitely burns calories. The exercise demonstrators are sweating during the workout.
Pros. This workout did help me to stretch, use balance, and allow me to focus. I felt clear, relaxed and slightly invigorated after the workout. Also, the exercise demonstrators sometimes lost their balance, which made me not feel so bad when I wobbled and had to put a foot or hand down for balance.
Cons. If you don’t know yoga, there is not enough verbal instruction for you to perform the moves, or go from one move to the next. I had to keep stopping to watch the DVD to see what I had to do. Once I learn the moves, this will be remedied. Also, some of the moves caused a little discomfort in my lower back.
Overall Review. I enjoyed this workout. I will continue to use Bob Harper’s “Yoga for the Warrior” on alternate days between my strength training workouts. Not only will I gain flexibility, balance and clarity as a yoga workout should deliver, but I will burn calories as well. I give this DVD a 4.8 on a 5.0 scale.
