The weather is warming and that means that it’s time for some serious camping. However, if I camp, it has to include two of my favorite activities: eating great food and wine tasting. Luckily, I live in Northern California, very near Napa and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. These two areas produce some of the very best and intriguing California wines.
Zinfandels and more is only a two-hour’s drive from San Francisco.
With 35 award-winning wineries within ten miles, the Far Horizons 49er Village RV Resort in Plymouth has everything I want. Small nearby stores offer fresh food and cheeses to go with newly purchased wine. Equally exciting, there is a cafe on the property, so cooking is optional.
Beyond food and wine opportunities, the facilities focus on RV camping — 300 sites — which includes cable TV. However, for those who would rather rough it in a cabin, 15 fully equipped cozy cabins are available as well. When tired of wine tasting, there are plenty of activities available, such as horseshoes, fishing, pool, shuffleboard, volleyball, and swimming.
Apples, wine, and camping are two hours east of San Francisco
Known for the freshest, most delicious fruit and even better wines is lush Apple Hill in Placerville. Luckily, Ponderosa Resort is located on the American River in nearbyLotus, and is a perfect place to stay while nibbling and sipping. Included on the property are 146 RV, tent, and rental options, such as fully equipped trailers and cabins. Rounding this out is a general store and cafe.
Due to its proximity on the water, all forms of water activities abound such as, rafting, fishing, swimming and kayaking. There’s also, bocce ball, a heated pool, horseshoe pit, nature walks, volleyball, pool and ping pong.
World famous wine country is only a one-hour drive from San Francisco.
Located on the famed Silverado Trail known for great wineries, Napa Valley Expo (video) is the place to be for RVers who want to be in the center of the action. It’s short on extras, but its 75 sites are within walking distance of excellent wineries and downtown Napa making it a perfect home base for wine tasting while enjoying a stimulating atmosphere. After all, it is also a community center hosting rodeos, trade shows, concerts, and the county fair.
