“The Vampire Diaries” has a knack for introducing compelling characters. In four eventful seasons, The CW favorite has amassed a backlog of important players. However, one of the most beloved characters has been there from the beginning: Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola). The cheerleader turned perfectionist vampire is one of the show’s strongest leads. Yet, I think, with Season Five kicking off a new chapter in the fall and “The Originals” heading to New Orleans it seems time for Caroline to say goodbye to TVD and hello to a one-way ticket to the French Quarter.
Why She Needs to Go
If Caroline is one of TVD’s strongest assets why should we push her out the door? If we’re going for the easy explanation one word will say it all: Klaroline. Forget Stelena vs. Delena, the Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline pairing is where it’s at. Their chemistry sizzles whether they’re at each other’s throats or having a romantic moment. (There’s a reason why Entertainment Weekly awarded their goodbye in the season four finale as the Most Rewound Moment!) The ‘shipper’s, including myself, will be restless until Caroline follows our favorite bad-boy to his spin-off.
Beyond Klaus, if Caroline headed over to “The Originals” it might help her character get some bigger and better stories than she currently has on TVD. The main criticism I heard this season was that the show was suffering from too many complicated storylines in order to serve the large cast. Caroline deserves better than to constantly being playing second fiddle to the main love triangle.
Leaving Mystic Falls
Right now, in my opinion, is the perfect time to spin Caroline’s character off as the show transitions to post high school life. In this instance, the show would need to walk the same line it’s predecessor “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” did in between the third and fourth seasons. Basically, they need to pull a Cordelia to “Angel” maneuver. There are so many easy explanations the show could use as a way to send Caroline off that leave the door wide-open for those likely cross-over events. Maybe she needs to go in search of a missing Tyler, ends up in New Orleans, gets pulled into Klaus’ new world and ends up staying for good?
Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) would need to adjust without their favorite blonde around everyday. Yet, in the long run, the move will benefit everyone. Evening out the number of strong main players on both shows gives everyone stronger and more focused storylines. By shaking things up it would present them with new opportunities and character interactions, too. And just think of the dramatic goodbye they could give Caroline on TVD only to turn around and give Klaus the shock of his life when his true love shows up on his doorstep!
