I’m not sure where to begin. I will start by telling you my name. I am known to the world as Cassandra Kelly. I’ve been a vampire for a long time. It happened so long ago that I have no thoughts of what it was like before I became a vampire. I have three small children. They are the love of my life. I’m sure you are wondering how I could be a vampire and a mom. That’s a tricky question. I had a sister long ago. My sister had a daughter. My sister’s daughter was my niece. She was a young and wild hippy type. Her name was Judith. She had a daughter that was every bit as wild as her mother. Judith’s daughter’s name was Jillian. Jillian ran the streets and eventually caused herself a lot of trouble. She ended up with three little ones. Jillian went to sleep one night and didn’t wake up. Jillian’s mother Judith could no more take care of a child than the man in the moon. That left me to care for the children. I know you are wondering if that was a good step on the part of the courts. The decision to give three small children to a relative yes, that was a wise decision but, to one said vampire? The answer of course would have been no, if they’d known I was a vampire. They did not know I was a vampire. That is the answer to that question.
As vampires go I’m relatively normal. I should start by saying I’m a good vampire. I don’t kill people. I should clarify that statement. I look totally human. To look at me I look like anybody walking down the street. I have blond hair, blue eyes and I’m of average height. Well, maybe a little on the short side but, that’s okay with me. My skin is a little pale but nothing to draw attention to me.
I do have super human strength. That actually is a good quality. I could pick up a car if I had to but, I don’t particularly like going around picking up cars. The kids would start to question my strength. It’s best to just keep that to myself. Everyone needs a little privacy in their lives. There’s no point in revealing every little detail of myself. I know you’ve heard that vampires cannot be in the sun. It pretty much cooks them right on the spot. Well, that is true but I’ve figured that out. At least somewhat. I went on line and I ordered every sunscreen known to man. I found one that I had purchased from California. It’s very good and it really works. I can go out in the sun for a few hours without literally burning up. I just have to make sure I lather it on good. I have to be careful that I don’t miss a spot of my skin. It would look like dried up, burned skin. I don’t want to present an old prune’s skin to the public. What would the PTA think. Oh there’s one more thing that I forgot to mention. I seriously have to stay away from garlic. Things start to get really crazy if I’m near garlic. My head starts to spin and before you know it I’m out cold. I try to avoid garlic at all costs.
The children are the love of my life. Sammy is 9 years old. He’s going to be tall when he grows up. He’s a good boy. He gets good grades in school and has a lot of friends. Sammy has dark hair like his father. The kids haven’t seen their father in years. He had a drug problem. We don’t know what happened to him. His sister Kathy looks more like me. She has blond hair and blue eyes. She has lots of friends that spend a lot of time at our house. The littlest one Sally, is 3 years old going on 30. She’s very articulate and a touch on the bossy side. What can you do? Kids are kids.
I belong to the PTA and help out for school parties and sometimes I go on field trips. There is no Mr. in my life. Sometimes the parents at the school question me about that but, I never answer their questions. There was someone a long time ago that I cared about. It didn’t work out for reasons I’d rather not go into at this time. So, to make a long story short there’s just me and the kids. There was a meddling mother at the school that tried to fix me up with her brother. Let’s just say it did not work. Vampires are notorious for not making good girlfriends.
We live in a big, old house on the outskirts of town. I love the house. It’s an old, victorian house with great character. The only problem is that things are always breaking. We do need a new roof and I’m working on finding someone that will fix it. We just got a new water heater so that should last for awhile. There are lots of bedrooms and a large dining room and living room. There’s plenty of room for the kids and their friends. It’s a great house to play hidenseek in. There’s lots of places that make great hiding spots.
I’m sure you are wondering how we support ourselves.I should say how I support all of us. I received a large inheritance as a child. The powers that be set up a trust fund for me. We live off of the trust fund. It’s not an extravagant amount of money but, some would say we do okay.
Since I am a vampire I’m really not into eating food. The sight of food actually makes me sick. I get a funny feeling and the next thing I know I’m violently ill. I’m not sure how it works but I guarantee regular food is not good for a vampire. To solve that problem I hired a cook for the children. It works out very well for all of us. She cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner for the children. She makes their lunches for school and provides food for guests when they are here. Her name is Mrs. Bee. She lives with us and we are happy to have her. The children love her and that makes me happy. She has a bedroom on the third floor. It gives her some privacy at the end of the day.
Once a month the PTA meets at our house. We have the biggest house in the neighborhood. I always supply tea, coffee and bakery. Mrs. Bee is an excellent baker. She makes an apple strudel to die for. That’s just a figure of speech but, everyone says it’s really good. We meet every third Wednesday of the month. The children like me to be involved with their school. I try to do what I can for the school.
I’m sure you are wondering what I do for sustenance. That’s where my story gets a little complicated. Since I don’t want to hurt people or drink their blood, I had to find a fresh blood supply. I found a meat market online that was willing to ship fresh blood to me. They are located in a small town outside of Transylvania. They ask no questions and I give no answers. I get a fresh shipment twice a week. It’s the perfect solution to my unique requirements. I have to keep my blood supply on ice until I’m ready to use it. Because of this I always have a generator out back, just in case the electric goes out. That would not be a good thing. I only have to have my nutrition once a day. I always make it in the middle of the night. I try to keep that part of my needs private at all times. I don’t think it would be good for the children to see me with a big glass of blood. As I’ve said before sometimes being a vampire can be a little tricky.
If you are wondering if being a vampire bothers me I would have to say at times yes. It does have it’s good points though. I’m exactly 23 years old. That’s how old I will always be. It’s a good age and I’m happy with it. On the down side I have no friends that are vampires. I would give a lot to have one vampire friend. I’m pretty much on my own at all times. It’s not like you can go on line and google vampire and one will pop up. It’s just not going to happen. People don’t even believe in vampires. I get it, I really do but, I’m a prime example of why people should open up their eyes.
I do have a hobby that keeps me busy. I should probably share that with you so you know everything that you need to know about me. I’m what you would call a watch dog. If something seems amiss in my neighborhood I go out and start investigating. So far this year alone I’ve caught two murderers, one rapist, solved three bank robberies and last but not least found out strictly by chance that my neighbor was having an affair. What can I say. That last part I didn’t want to know. It just popped up in my investigation. I’m not a priate investigator and I don’t work for an organization. I just do this on my own. You understand I’m trying to keep the neighborhood safe. I will say it’s not easy. The hardest part is disappearing after I call the police. The bad guys are usually in pretty bad shape by the time the good guys arrive on the scene.
During an investigation I’m gone from home several nights a week. Because of this I hired a housekeeper for the children. I like her and her name is Mrs. Malloy. She keeps the house spotless and helps with homework. Did I mention she lives at the house too. Remember the house is big so we have extra bedrooms. The cook and the housekeeper seem to get along good so it works for me. Mrs. Malloy sleeps in a downstairs bedroom. That was the one she picked and it was fine with me.
It’s been quiet around town for the past month. The only excitng thing going on was a field trip to the aquarium. I went with the 4th grade class. I really enjoyed myself. After the field trip everyone stopped at Danny’s fast burgers. I told the other room mother that I wasn’t feeling well. That went over okay. It explained why I wasn’t eating. I always have to be one step ahead of everyone. It would never work if anyone found out that I was a real vampire.
It was 7:00 and the kids had just finished dinner. Their homework was done and they were getting ready to take their baths. I had just sat down at the computer. I could hear the television from the den. It sounded like the news anchor had just come on with an urgent message. I got up from the computer and ran in the living room. I missed the first part but, I heard the last part loud and clear. There was a child missing in the park. That was never a good thing. It was dark and the park could be dangerous.
I told Mrs. Malloy I had to go out for awhile. She was used to spending evenings alone with the children. They listened to her. They were good kids. She’d make sure they got their baths and went to bed on time. Our cook Mrs. Bee, would give the children a snack before going to bed. I had noticed some peanut butter and crackers on the counter. I knew that would be their evening snack.
Since the sun was down I didn’t have to worry about my skin. I put on my army boots. I always wore them if I was going hiking in the woods. I put on a light jacket and out the door I went. I had a big suv and it was filled with baseball gear. I started the engine and took off for the park. It was the law to have your lights on at night. I really didn’t need them but, I tried to never draw attention to myself. I could see in the dark just as easily as I could see in the light. I cut the engine at the highest point in the park. I could see lights off in the distance. That’s where the search party must be. I knew this park like the back of my hand. I walked this park many times as a child and just last week I’d taken a long walk on the bike path. This was no place for a young child to be. I knew he must be afraid. The temperatures always dropped at night so I was afraid he’d be cold. I used my supersonic eyes to look through trees in hopes that he would be hiding around one of them. There was no such luck. I saw no sign of him. There’s one thing about vampires they can hear the tiniest pin drop from far away. I stood perfectly still and listened. From far off I could hear a man shouting orders. I contiued to stand quietly and listen. I was standing near an old oak tree. The tree was set back from the path. I was scanning the area with my eyes and suddenly I saw a shadow about 1,000 feet from my location. I centered in on the spot and sure enough there was some sort of movement in the leaves. I trained my ears on the exact spot. I heard a soft muffled cry. I knew it was the little boy. I ran to him in record time. I picked him up and dried his tears. This is where it would get tricky. I had to alert the authorities to the boy’s location. There was just one problem. I couldn’t let them see me. I had to stay under their radar. The boy seemed to be okay but, he was cold, tired and scared. I could tell he just wanted to be home with his mom and dad.
I thought for a moment and came up with a plan that should work. I started walking closer to where the lights were shining. The little boy was so tired he started to nod off in my arms. He was such a beautiful little boy. He was chubby little boy with light hair. I felt so sorry for him but I knew that soon enough he’d be back home where he belonged. I stayed close to the woods as I carried the little boy. When we got as close as I dared to go I put the little boy down. I told him to walk toward the officer standing in the light. I told the little boy that the officer would help him. I watched him from the shadows as he walked toward the officer. I saw the officer radio someone and I knew he’d spotted the boy.
The little boy tried to tell everyone about the lady in the park but, they thought he was making it up. By morning even the little boy had forgotten about the lady. He was just happy to be home.
I had walked back in my front door about 2:00 a.m. I felt energized. I always loved when I could help someone. By morning the official story was that the little boy had wandered down the path and the officer had spotted him. That story worked for me. As far as anyone knew I wasn’t involved and that was the way I wanted to keep it. Sometimes being a vampire was a lonely life but, that’s the way I liked it. I tried to make a difference in the world and after last night I felt good. Actually I felt very good. I just chalked it up to a day in the life of a Vampire mom.
