The General Hospital 50th anniversary celebration kicked into high gear several months ago. Former cast favorites began settling into long abandoned soap roles. Middle-aged Aztec princess Felicia Jones, Five-time married Vampire slayer Lucy Coe, and aging spy Anna Devane were among the first to stroll back into town.
A few former Port Charlsians showed up to track down the women they loved. Those included Frisco Jones, also an aging spy; Dr. Kevin, Lucy’s current spouse; and ex mobster Duke Lavery, Anna’s ex husband/soul mate. (Didn’t he die a few decades back? Twice?)
Evil Helena Cassadine, psychotic Faison, and freaky/weird Heather Webber, showed up for one last criminal romp. Helena is dead now. Faison is finally behind bars. Heather is supposed to be in an institution for the criminally insane. (She’s really good at escaping justice, so I wouldn’t bet on it.)
Arrogant but hunky Frisco wasted no time in reconstructing the well-worn GH triangle with ex wife Felicia and her fiance. Matt, the good-guy, police commissioner turned barkeep, really loves Felicia and helped raise her daughters. Unfortunately Felicia is indecisive and fickle, but how cool is it that an aging soap diva can still have her cake and eat it too.
Australian billionaire Jasper Jacks arrived with his fiance, ex-wife/true love/supermodel/three time spouse to two different mobsters, Brenda Barrett Morgan Jacks Corinthos. Given their pending nuptials, Jacks and Brenda should have been close and cuddly; but within hours of arriving in town, Carly (ex to two of Brenda’s hubbies and best friend to her hubby number 3) caught Brenda trying to rekindle Sonny Corinthos’ flame.
Bad move, Brenda! Sonny loves Kate/Connie now (same woman, two personalities). And when Jacks heard about it, he got angry and walked away; so Brenda’s going it alone. Except for a few spicy cat fights with always-interfering Carly. Soaps are oh-so complicated!
No GH50 party would be complete without divorced-but-still-couple-y, Luke and Laura. Their big wedding in the early 80s kept 30 million Americans glued to their TVs. It was so big, Elizabeth Taylor came on board to skulk through the wedding crowd as the first incarnation of the evil Helena Cassadine.
Luke and Laura are back. So is Scott Baldwin– side three of a once-simmering love triangle. Only this time it’s Scottie who is engaged to Laura. He re-hooked up with her somewhere in Europe while she was recuperating from an incurable brain disease (another GH miracle). This time it’s Luke who’s outside looking in. Or is he?
The Dead… and the Undead
Resurrection miracles are a soap staple. With a GH reunion this big, there had to be a few returning dead. There’s Duke, whose first return was really Faison in a Duke mask. Next came long dead and buried A.J. Quartermaine, who was actually recuperating in a European hospital– which is also where Anna found the real Duke.
The actor who played police detective John McBain, a “One Life to Live” transplant, revived his role as Caleb, the resident “Port Charles” vampire. Caleb became obsessed with Samantha McCall Morgan, played by the actress who years ago played Libby, Caleb’s former vampire soul mate.
John killed his “vampire” double without fancy silver bullets, wooden stakes, or anything found in a traditional vampire flick. So after all this time, slayer Lucy finally figured out that Caleb wasn’t really a vampire after all. Or was he?
What Brought These Old Characters Back to Port Charles?
It’s General Hospital’s 50th anniversary. That’s reason enough. But officially, many Port Charles returnees came for the revival debut of the Nurse’s Ball .
Mousy nurse Sabrina and her gay-and-flaunting-it best bud male nurse Felix worked hard to make the ball happen. Lucy Coe, the original Nurse’s Ball emcee, got the financing on track. Carly donated her hotel ballroom for the venue.
The General Hospital HIV/AIDS fundraiser is a fun-fest of songs, dances, strip teases, lip syncing, and a Hollywood style red carpet walk. Rick Springfield… uh, Dr. Drake even sang “Jessie’s Girl,” all to honor Patrick’s late (She isn’t really dead, she’s in Europe) wife, Robin. That’s as good an excuse as any for a mass return and a great big soapy celebration.
I’ll be tuning in tomorrow.
