Years ago my chiropractor recommended I sleep on a water pillow. I had heard of water beds, but had never seen a water pillow before. These can be expensive, but mine was worth every penny. I used this pillow for five years, until it started to leak, and I absolutely loved it.
These pillows feel similar to a regular pillow in that they do have a soft padding on top, but there is a bladder below that holds tap or distilled water. The addition of the water allowed me to adjust the firmness and support to my neck throughout the night, and mine gave me the proper support that my neck needed.
The one down side of the water pillow is that they are heavy, and it can take some experimenting to add the right amount of water for your comfort level. Mine was also much flatter than my husbands memory foam pillow, and when I made the bed every morning the height of the pillows were not uniform. This was a mere small annoyance.
Organic Buckwheat or Millet Pillows
If you want to go the all natural route, due to allergies or sensitivities, you might want to consider a pillow filled with organic buckwheat or millet. A brand called “Serenity Pillows” offer both, and they have a wool batting in the pillow as well.
If you have ever slept on a buckwheat filled pillow you know that it makes some noise every time you move. If this bothers you the millet might be a better choice. Both will give amazing support to the back and neck. Millet may bother some with allergies because it does have a grassy odor, but this is supposed to dissipate in time.
These pillows are designed for both the side sleeper and the person who switches from his back to his side to sleep. They have a zippered interior that will allow you to remove some of the millet or buckwheat so you can adjust the height of the pillow for a customized fit.
Allergic to feathers? A down pillow may be the right choice for you. They come in soft, medium and firm, so there are options for the side, back and stomach sleeper when choosing down pillows.
A down filled pillow for side sleepers can be very comfortable and provide the proper height to fill that gap between the neck and the mattress. Down filled pillows for back sleepers generally don’t need to be as thick, as the distance between the curvature of the neck and the mattress is less.
If you are a stomach sleeper a down filled pillow is also a good choice since you need a thinner pillow so you spine is not bent during the night.
Poly Filled Pillows
If you like the feel of a down pillow, but are allergic to feathers, you can try a down alternative pillow. These pillows are poly filled and can mimic the feel of down. Poly filled pillows come in soft, medium and firm support, so there are options for the side, back or stomach sleeper when choosing this type of pillow.
Side Sleeper Memory Foam Pillow
I purchased my husband a memory foam pillow for side sleepers. We had tried a memory foam pillow in the past but didn’t care for them, but this side sleeper pillow has helped him get a more complete nights rest.
Some memory foam can be hot, but the Iso-Cool Memory Foam Pillow remedies that problem. It is made to become either warm or cool, and it adjusts according to the temperature of your body. Tiny beads are used, called PCM’s (which stands for “Phase Change Materials”), which absorbs and releases heat in reaction to your body temperature. Along with that it also uses the popular visco-elastic memory foam filling.
We have found that pillows with gusseted sides work best for side sleepers, and this pillow has that particular design. The cover is made of 300 thread count cotton, but my husband uses a pillow case over it so that doesn’t really matter to us. The cover on this pillow can be removed for washing.
I initially purchased it for myself but didn’t care for it, but my husband absolutely loves it. These can also be a heavier choice, but it gives him the support he needs (his back is recovering from a herniated disc).
Finding the right pillow can make for a better nights sleep. Do you wake up every morning with back or neck pain? Do you toss and turn during the night? If so, you might need a new mattress or a new pillow. Obviously trying a new pillow, one that fits your sleep style, is the cheaper route to go since a good mattress can often cost several thousand dollars.
We all have different sleep positions, as well as health issues concerning our backs. If you have a bad back, it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor or chiropractor to get some advice about which type of pillow is right for you.
