One of the most common musical instruments and most versatile is the guitar. Years have passed when I started to play this instrument and I understood that its chords are its principles and the strumming is its heart. This piece of sexy wood with six strings and a hole that modulates vibrations is one of the most efficient tools to capture a woman’s heart.
Four years before, I could barely hold a guitar nor correctly strum one. Some of the guitar experts that I know in the internet started at an early age learning to use the instrument. I don’t have that much interest during my early high school days so I wasn’t able to “play” a guitar until I was 17 years old.
My mother and father wanted me to play a guitar so that I can also sing psalms and worships to the Lord in the Church but this motivation wasn’t just enough to make my fingers stick to the strings and develop coating calluses. What made my heart beat was the same source that made my hand strum the strings. She was very inspiring to the extent that I will love music if it is a way to love her. Something greater was needed to fuel my guitar passion and she was the answer.
So I started to learn the guitar chords starting from Majors. A major, B major, C major and I practiced those chords on a new guitar bought by my father from Cebu. I didn’t know how to strum yet because it’s a lot easier to place your fingers on those strings than to move your hand with the rhythm while being conscious of what chord are you in. This difficulty did not stop me because of my puppy love channeled inspiration. I have always said to myself that I will not give up and I will not stop until I render a song to her.
Because strumming was difficult to learn on my own, I sought a help from a friend who already knows how to play the guitar. She then taught me the chords of a song “I’m Yours by Jason Mras”. This song was a perfect piece for my dear crush. I practiced whenever I had time and I was able to do the strumming with my fingers on the proper guitar chords coupled with my singing. I developed nasty calluses but I know that it will help improve my guitar skills.
That was the start of my guitar lessons, I started by myself and with a help of a friend. My ability to strum at different beats and tempos where developed while I was already practicing Songs for the church. I went with the “cantors”, the people who play the guitars during the mass, and slowly improved. Transposition, transposing from one chord to another chord while strumming was my next achievement. At this point, I was already feeling the beat and I can follow the song’s rhythm without stammering. It took me a month to master the chords, another month to learn strumming and a few weeks to do transpositions.
Inspiration and purpose of learning to play a guitar is an important factor. There are a lot of difficulties that might hinder or halt your learning process. So without this great inspiration, difficulty of learning to playing a guitar is doubled. Find inspiration and don’t wait for it, master the Chords, learn basic strumming and start transposing from one chord to another. Feed on your inspiration and you will be able to blend with a song’s melody.
