Gravity is a powerful force found in nature that holds the universe in proper alignment. It helps the planets remain in the correct configuration, it helps the earth rotate on its axis and revolve around the sun, and it helps the moon revolve around the earth. Gravity keeps everything on earth actually on the earth. It is a force that has amazed and perplexed human beings for centuries. We may not fully understand all of the nuances of how gravity actually works and it may not be something with tangible physical properties that we are accustomed to, but what we do know is that it works.
The moon on the other hand is unlike the earth. The moon is a celestial body that is surrounded by gravity. Gravity supports the moon in its place, but the moon itself contains no gravity within it. In an environment such as the moon, that does not contain gravity, the same laws of physics don’t apply, or even exist. We’ve all seen video footage of astronauts in space, floating through the air, with their bodies and their surroundings physically affected by the lack of gravity on the moon. They are said to be at zero gravity.
In many ways, God’s Holy Spirit is like gravity. It is a powerful force found in nature that also holds all of God’s creation in proper alignment. However, whereas gravity works on the planets and celestial bodies, the Holy Spirit works in and around us. It surrounds us with peace, joy, love, goodness, and kindness. God’s Holy Spirit is in constant motion all around us while also intertwining itself within us, becoming one with our spirits, making itself an essential component of our bodily and spiritual composition. While many of us truly worship the sacred connection that we have with God through His Holy Spirit, there are many people however, that are just like the moon. They are completely surrounded by God, with God working all around them, but they simply lack God’s Holy Spirit within them. They too are at zero gravity.
For people who are at zero gravity they are just like the astronauts on the moon. They float through life, while their physical and spiritual beings are wholly affected by the lack of God within them. God wakes them up each day, provides the air they breathe, and the food they eat, yet they are unable to simply say “thank you.” God blesses them mind, body and soul, providing them with an abundance of His grace, mercy and holy righteousness, yet they are blind to God’s divine movement all around them. God is an eternal presence by their side, never forsaking or denying them, yet they are unable to praise His holy name. They are incapable of discerning God’s anointing on them, powerless to fulfill God’s will and purpose for their lives. They don’t follow Jesus’ example of how to be a light to this dark world and they can’t comprehend the meaning of the words “love your neighbor as yourself.” They don’t forgive others and they don’t seek forgiveness. They don’t live by the fruit of the Spirit and they don’t repent of their sins. They simply don’t know how to be still and let God be God.
Let us recognize the One whom God exalted to the highest place, whose name is above all names, so that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Let us never be at zero gravity again. Amen.
