In the Marvel Universe, Kevin Feige runs the entire world of superheroes while men like Joss Whedon work closely with him on putting everything together. Fox has Mark Millar, the man who created the Ultimates world, to help shepherd their “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four” movies. DC Comics and Warner Bros. now have their man as well. Christopher Nolan directed the last three Batman movies and his “Dark Knight” trilogy is the only successful movie property to come from DC Comics since the last Batman movies.
Now, Warner Bros. has hired Christopher Nolan to “Godfather” their entire DC Comics catalog, as they attempt to replace the “Harry Potter” franchise with something they hope will carry them through the next decade. It is their hope that Nolan can re-create the magic he made with Batman with the rest of the DC heroes.
“Dark Knight” Trilogy
Marvel is sitting on top of the comic book world in Hollywood. “The Avengers” is the third highest grossing film of all time and fans seem to have fallen in love with “Iron Man,” “Thor,” and to a lesser extent “Captain America.” This brand remains one of the hottest in the world and Warner Bros. would love to see their movies reach this level. The funny thing is, they already have.
Sure, “Superman Returns,” “The Green Lantern” and “Jonah Hex” were all disappointments, but Warner Bros. has the “Dark Knight” trilogy. Everyone can talk about how great “The Avengers” was, and it deserves it because it reached a plateau only “Titanic” and “Avatar” reached before. However, no other Marvel movie hit the billion dollar mark. Two of Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” movies broke $1 billion. “The Avengers” was successful, but “Dark Knight” and “Dark Knight Rises” blows the other Marvel movies out of the water when it comes to box office.
“Man of Steel”
Just because Nolan succeeded with Batman doesn’t mean he can succeed with other heroes. However, the big news out of Warner Bros. is that the new Superman movie “Man of Steel” is fantastic. If the movie is anywhere near as great as studio executives believe it is, DC Comics would have their first major success outside of Batman since “Superman II.” Nolan was the executive producer and Zack Snyder directed the movie. If it hits big, Nolan will have proven himself as a producer.
The news is that Christopher Nolan will be the man to make sure the DC Comics ship is piloted on the right course. First up is bringing their team-up movie “Justice League” to the big screen. It was supposed to hit in 2015, but rumors are the script was horrible. Nolan would work with Warner Bros. to bring in a new screenwriter and find a director. He would make sure the movie was following the same plan he used for “Dark Knight” and “Man of Steel,” and he would try to work a miracle for DC Comics.
If anyone can work that miracle, Christopher Nolan is the man.
