The benefits of CO2 are well documented but no one knows it or seems to care. Why is this?
“Good news is no news, which is why the mainstream media largely ignores all studies showing net benefits of climate change,” said Matt Ridley, author of Rational Optimist, according to Spectator. What the media won’t say about the benefits of CO2 and a slightly warmer earth would fill volumes, but they occupy little print space or air time, if any at all.
Warming has amounted to a mere 0.8˚C in the last 150 years. Such a small change has improved human welfare. How? Warmer temperatures make for fewer winter deaths, longer lifespans, reduced energy costs, improved crop yields, decreases in droughts, and greater biodiversity. Good news, however, does not make headlines.
In the meantime, the benefactors of such good must endure the tyranny of climate policy turned into propaganda. While President Obama wasn’t able to get Congress to institute sweeping climate change policy, he wired around it using executive power.
Now the Supreme Court will hear the case about EPA overreach on CO2 emissions, extending its regulatory tentacles from mobile sources such as cars to stationary sources such as power plants and refineries. Such expansive overkill occurred not long after the propagandist agency declared the life-giving substance a pollutant, leaving citizens to fear for breathing out.
In the meantime, states like California instituted disastrous legislation like the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which ushered in AB32 to enable the highest energy costs and availability restrictions of any state in the union. Furthered by the idiocy of its policy makers, the likes of the Barbara Boxers of the world spewed their ignorance of CO2 benefits into ignorant policies on climate.
The crime of it all is that climate policy, rather than CO2 itself, causes harm to people. According to Ridley, such policies have driven people into fuel poverty, made industries non-competitive, driven up food prices, accelerated the destruction of forests, killed rare birds of prey, and divided communities.
- 200,000 people die every year worldwide because grain crops are turned into fuel instead of food.
- 65 people a day die in the U.K. owing to the unaffordability of heat for their homes.
- The British government plans to double the cost of electricity to consumers by 2030.
Climate change policy does real harm to real people and impedes a change that could benefit all mankind if we only let it. But, letting it would not make news.
