It’s kickoff of college football. Tonight we will sit down on our favorite couch or in our favorite bar and drink our favorite beer of choice. We will block out any and all stress from our lives and we will turn on a college football game. It is this simple action that is the reason America is still beating.
With the recession, unemployment, divorces at an all time high, war and the countless other stress causes; it is easy to get caught up in a world and country that is quick to beat you down. However through our trials there is always one thing, or time in our lives that keeps us moving forward. This time in our lives when we cared little for anything and pushed forward only because we wanted enough money in our pockets to make it to the bar that night so maybe, just maybe, you could catch the eye of someone you could brag about.
Life was simple in our 20 something’s. Beer was cheap, cares were low and bills were a joke. Life was good and the music that was upbeat and bragged about spending millions was something, we some how could relate to. Somewhere, somehow all of this changed.
We grew up. We got a job, got married and had children; although not always in that order. Bills got bigger and our cars became mini vans. That girl at the bar that we spent extra time shaving for, was now the girl who thought we were over weight, boring and the creepy old man. What happened?
Well sir, or mam, nothing happened. We got older, we moved into bigger and better, well other, stages of our lives. Sometimes it feels unbearable. Sometimes we look in the mirror and think “this isn’t me”. Sometimes we sit at work and think “I’m burnt out”.
Fear not America, because tonight is our night. Tonight is our night that we suddenly remember how to shotgun a beer using only our teeth to open the can. Tonight is the night we remember that we danced on tables and everyone loved it. Tonight is the night where no matter how many bills you have, or how in debt you are, or how much you hate your job; you remember the nights when none of that mattered. When the only thing mattered was what shirt – if any – of your favorite university you would wear to the big game. Tonight is the night when you remember how dumb freshman were, yet how great it was to meet a good looking one.
This my friends is college football. Our happy reminder. The savior from ourselves. The reminder to ourselves that we were once, and still are, awesome. So tonight crack open a beer, find your happy place and embrace you inner college spirit. You deserve it, after all this is America and in America we’re awesome.
