Feeling down? Nothing cures those humdrum feelings like a good comedy film. Whenever I’m feeling blue, these three movies are my go-to prescription for guaranteed laughs.
Movie #1: Christmas Vacation
No matter what time of year, Christmas Vacation always delivers the gift of laughter. It’s the story of Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his dream of having the perfect family Christmas. The trouble starts while selecting a Christmas tree and everything falls apart from there. Both Clark’s and Ellen’s (Beverly D’Angelo) family come to stay for the holiday, their differences threatening Clark’s view of a perfect Christmas. Enduring one problem after another begins to drive Clark crazy, from Uncle Lewis igniting the Christmas tree to cousin Eddie emptying his RV toilet tank into the storm drain because “the shitter was full.”
Movie #2: The Lady Eve
The Lady Eve (starring Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck) is a sharp, fast-paced film that offers all the goods of a classic 1940s comedy. “Hopsie” Pike, millionaire, meets Jean Harrington, con woman, aboard a passenger liner after spending a year on the Amazon studying snakes. Jean plans on going for Hopsie’s money but ends up falling in love. Hopsie is also head-over-heels until he discovers the truth about Jean and dumps her on the spot. Jean devises a plan of revenge by pretending to be an English aristocrat. She fools Hopsie into marrying her and she unleashes a wacky plan to make him pay for breaking her heart.
Movie #3: Stepbrothers
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly create comedy magic with this film. These two 40-year-old men still living with their parents are forced to become friends when their parents marry each other. Whether they’re building bunk beds to make more room for activities or filming the “Boats ‘n Hoes” video on their dad’s yacht, this film is hilarious from start to finish. Some problems arise, but all is forgiven at the end when Brendan (Ferrell) throws an incredible party.
While these three films are very different in style and time period, they are all alike in one way: they all provide quality entertainment and laughs. All are brilliantly written and directed to create classic films that will withstand the test of time. No matter how old these films become, they will always remain relevant for their genius lines and amazing performances by gifted actors and actresses.
