There are many cool places to visit in West Virginia. There are several different historical sites that have to do with the Civil War and the oil and gas industry in the 1800’s that can be seen along State Route 50. While taking a break from traveling, I picked up a few pamphlets at a West Virginia Welcome Center. While surfing the web, I also found some pretty cool places to visit in West Virginia. This article gives a brief overview of some of these places that can be found in this state.
Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park
The Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is located near Summerville and along the outskirts of the Gauley River National Recreation Area. The Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park marks the location of an important Civil War Battle that occurred on September 10th, 1861.
The Union Army was victorious in this Civil War battle by pushing the Confederate troops back towards the south. Brigadier General William Rosecrans and Union soldiers kept the Confederate troop led by Brigadier General John B. Floyd from taking control of the Kanawha Valley again.
The Summersville Lake is the largest lake in West Virginia. According to www.summersvillewv.org, this lake has “28,000 acres of water and 60 miles of shoreline”.
Visitors at Summersville Lake can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and scuba diving.
Although there are not any designated camping areas at Summersville Lake, nearby camping accomodations at the Mountain Lake and Battle Run Campgrounds.
Summersville Lake Retreat
The Summersville Lake Retreat Area in Nebo, West Virginia has a new and unique sightseeing attraction for West Virginia this year. A lighthouse that overlooks the Summersville Lake was opened on June 20, 2013. This is the only lighthouse ever in West Virginia. it has 122 steps and is open to visitors daily. Babcock State Park
This is another beautiful state park near the infamous New River Gorge Recreational Area. The mountainous views at this State Park are breathtaking in the fall. The Babcock State Park is located in Clifftop, West Virginia.
