Looking for a quick way to spruce up a room? Give your old lamp a quick makeover. You’ll be surprised at what a difference a new lampshade, a unique paint finish, or an addition of embellishments can make. Whether you’re using a lamp you already have, or you’re dressing up an old flea market or yard sale find, here are 7 ways to makeover an old lamp in a jiffy.
Update the color of the base – A fresh coat of paint can change the entire look of a dated table lamp. Remove the shade and hardware, cover the socket with newspaper, and spray paint the entire base in smooth even coats. Try a bold color, or a textured spray paint for something unique.
Add texture to the base – Go one step further and try adding a unique element to the lamp base. Wrap rope, ribbon, or cording around the base to add a textural effect.
Draw a design on the base – Use a paint pen, or a thin paintbrush and acrylic paint to draw a one-of-a-kind design to the lamp base. Add polka dots, swirls, flowers, lines, or any simple design for a truly unique look.
Add embellishments to the base – Makeover a lamp with a hot glue gun and whatever craft embellishments appeal to you. Beads, gems, buttons, lace, fringe, and other items can be quickly glued in place to create an impressive lamp base.
Slipcover the lampshade – If you need a quick and easy way to makeover a lamp, try a ready-to-fit lampshade slipcover. These unique lampshade slipcovers allow you to select any pattern and color for any size and shape lamp you have. They stretch easily to fit, and are washable.
Refinish the lampshade – If you prefer, you can refinish the lampshade yourself with scrap fabric. Simply pull the fabric tight over the existing lampshade, fold the ends over, and hot glue in place.
Add embellishments to the lampshade – Transform a plain lampshade into something extraordinary with fabric rosettes, beading, fringe, feathers, crystals, cording, buttons, or other simple embellishments. Again, all you’ll need is a hot glue gun and whatever embellishments you choose.
With a little imagination, you can makeover a lamp that will spruce up any room. Don’t be afraid to go bold with color on either the base or the lampshade, but avoid overdoing it by duplicating it on both.
