When Cher fills in for judge Len Goodman on Monday’s “Dancing With the Stars,” don’t be surprised if this season’s stars seem to be a little bit…well, starstruck. The pop superstar will bring five decades of iconic entertainment experience to the judges table, and while she may lack Len’s technical savvy, she’ll have some serious superfans in the ballroom.
Here’s what this season’s “DWTS” cast members are saying about dancing in front of a superstar:
Comedian Bill Engvall told TV Guide, “That’s when I knew there’s a God,” when he learned that Cher would be a judge on the celeb dancing competition. “I’ve been a fan of Cher since the ‘Sonny & Cher’ show,” he said. “I always thought she was one of the sexiest — I look at her and go, I could totally hang out with this lady. It’s just going to be a blast. I’m dancing to a Cher song, and she’s going to be 10 feet from me. … She’s on par with me, as far as a fantasy girl, with Farrah Fawcett in front of the Indian blanket.”
In an interview with “Access Hollywood,” leaderboard topper Corbin Bleu said, “I think she’s gonna be phenomenal. When you think about it she knows how to form, and one of my favorite parts about the show is just the entertainment aspect of it.” (As an added bonus, Cher probably won’t slam Corbin and his pro partner Karina Smirnoff for “gyrating,” the way Len Goodman did last week)
Pro dancer Val Chmerkovskiy spoke to On the Red Carpet about Cher as a guest judge: “I think it’s amazing,” he said. “First of all, it’s a huge honor to dance for Cher. Even though she’s maybe not a qualified ballroom dancer, she most certainly is well qualified in judging entertainment and passion and emotion and synchronization. She’s got a good eye for what looks good. But that aside, I’m just excited to be in front of Cher. You know, I want to make an impression on Cher. I want [celeb partner Elizabeth Berkley] to make an impression to her. I want us to be her favorite walking away from the show.”
On her blog for Parade, Amber Riley wrote that she’s “mortified” to be dancing in front of the Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Golden Globe winning pop icon: “I am such a fan of Cher and I don’t know if I’m going to be able to contain myself!” the “Glee” star wrote. “I’m going to have to tell her how much I love her…The accolades and awards that she’s won show that she’s more than qualified to give us some good tips and pointers, especially about performing. We’re going to want to impress her because when you’re dancing to somebody’s music, you want to do a really great job — especially when they’re judging it and sitting right there!”
But one “DWTS” celeb who’s already been voted off may have dodged a bullet when it comes to this week’s guest judge. In an interview with ABC News, Cher once said she wasn’t a fan of “Jersey Shore” star Snooki or reality shows in general: “I don’t like reality shows at all,” she said. “I kind of like people that do something. That aren’t just famous for I’m not sure what…”
Snooki was eliminated from the “Dancing With the Stars” competition last week, just in time to miss out on being critiqued by the unimpressed celeb judge.
“Dancing With the Stars” Season 17 airs on Mondays at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.
