Back in 2008 Visceral Games made a horror survival game called Dead Space which supposed to become a killer of the Resident Evil franchise because it wasn’t scary like it used to be in the old days. It received critical acclaim as one of the best Action-Horror games, and later spawned a sequel which became more action oriented but still had some scary things in its sleeve. But now we have 3rd game in franchise which has a lot of new things to discover. And question remains does Dead Space 3 has guts to be truthful to its franchise?
Dead Space 3 is a sequel to Dead Space 1 and 2, where you play as Isaac Clarke a former engineer who had to survive 2 outbreaks of evil Necromorphs which were created by mystery marker. But he is found by the last remnants of EarthGov who force him to help find his Ex-girlfriend Ellie and stop the Necromorph threat once and for all. Isaac agrees and the new adventure begins. For the first half of the game you will be flying in space and visiting different space stations just to save some of your essential friends and workers who in return will help you to get to your final destination an icy planet called Tau Volantis.
Right off the bat Dead Space 3 dropped the scary stuff entirely. The game doesn’t try to be tense or scary. You will be fighting your way again through dark corridors of the ship against Necromorphs who just run at you like madmen and just want to get shot. Also for the first time in series you will fight human enemies. The game just looses its touch with series giving us new additions like being able to roll and crouch to fight off bad guys like a commando guy. And to say that these 2 new moves are completely pointless and don’t give you an upper hand in any fight. There was only one best way to fight your enemies and that was “Hit And Run” tactic or just collect a lot of ammo and shoot them up. There is also upgraded bench mechanics. Now you can use your skills to build ultimate weapon.
Across your playthrough you will be finding different parts of weapons and resources which can be used to build new weapon parts. There are tons of different combinations of what you can create. But if you struggle finding resources you can always send your little scavenger bot to ditch some more resources and later it will arrive back to the bench and you will be able to collect your prize. If you really need resources you can also buy them using real money. But still you will enjoy crafting your best weapons and possibly spend most of your time using bench.
While multiplayer aspects from 2nd game was dropped Visceral Games decided to add drop-in drop-out coop mode. Full game can be completed with a friend who will play as 2nd new character John Carver who is a soldier of EarthGov and has a really bad story of his own. And talking about coop, the game also has a lot of optional missions to complete, but only 3 of them are coop required. And worst part of it you can’t access coop part without playing coop, which makes collecting all resources or other items impossible. Surprisingly coop plays very good in Dead Space 3 and you will enjoy it very much. Also while playing coop than playing it in single player. And it’s also challenging for example while 1 guy solves puzzle the other teammate has to defend him/her from enemies rush attack. Players can give each other items and blueprints for their new crafted guns, but alas you can’t give each other guns or resources to make life a bit easier.
Graphics looks good as always and whole soundtrack is action oriented with some tense aspects as well.
After finishing the game you will be given choice to play it again but in different mode. And there are entirely 3 different modes not including New Game+. The classic Dead Space fans can replay Dead Space 3 like very first game where you can only build weapons with blueprints and no crafting available, or you can play survival mode where you have to craft ammo and med kits from resources, and you won’t find any med kit or ammo clip laying around. And finally Hardcore mode from Dead Space 2 makes it return but slighter easier than its predecessor.
Dead Space 3 is undoubtedly an average sequel to a good franchise but still it has its own unique portion of fun. Coop and weapon crafting saves it from being a total atrocity to previous games. The game can be completed in total 10 hours if you take your time and complete all bonus missions to find better equipment and stuff. If you like coop you will get it, but if you think this game will try to scare you, you are in trouble then, it won’t happen. 8/10.
