DIY Tacky Holiday Sweater Party Ideas

by fat vox

Dressing up is not just for kids anymore. Adults want to get in on the fun too. When I was little I received a Christmas sweater for a gift every year. Holiday sweaters were worn during the holiday season; then they were not worn again until the next year. Today, grown-ups have holiday sweater parties. Adults must have envied the fun their kids were having so they decided to have some fun of their own. This article serves as a shopping guide and resource on the best picks for tacky holiday sweaters that you could wear to a themed party.

What are the best options for tacky holiday sweaters?
You might already have the best options in your closet. If you have Christmas decorations in your home all you have to do is pull them out or take them off your tree for the night and wear them on your sweater to your holiday party. If you do not have any decorations available and you want to keep it simple and low cost check with a friend or family member to see if you can borrow something of theirs to wear to the party. If you cannot borrow something I would check with your local second hand thrift stores. We have St. Vincent De Paul, Goodwill, Christian Outreach, Salvation Army and Manna for Life. I would also check with Walmart and Target. If you do not find what you looking for at any of those places I would check online with eBay, Amazon, Craigslist or another one of your favorite shopping websites. Here are a couple of websites where you can buy holiday sweaters if you need to. They sell holiday sweaters to customers of all ages.

What are the best items to pair with them?
The best items to pair with your holiday outfit are a hat or head piece, a pair of pants, shoes or slippers. You could even borrow one of your kids’ stuffed animals to carry for the night. Holiday hats, sweaters and slippers can be knitted or crocheted. Put your talent to work here. Be creative. That is what it is all about. Jewelry can be worn with your outfit to accessorize the look. I still have a holiday jewelry collection of earnings, necklaces, brooches and fashion lapel pins from way back when in my stash that I gathered through the years.

What about accessories that complete the over-the-top look?
The best accessories to pair with your holiday sweater are holiday earrings, garland, tree bulbs or lights. Wear a holiday decoration on your head to stand out. I have been trying to sell some garland, Christmas bulbs and an artificial Christmas tree on Craigslist this year that have not sold. If they do not sell I will be wearing the garland and Christmas bulbs on my holiday sweater so that I get some use out of it before I donate these items to the local second hand store.

Who says it has to be a holiday sweater?
I found a red sweatshirt in with my clothes. It looks brand new. What about decorating one of your sweatshirts or even a vest? If you have a white sweater, sweatshirt, vest, pair of pants or pair of socks you can buy some Rit Dye, Fabric Coloring or Fabric Dye Sticks at Walmart or Target and color your outfit before you decorate it. You can decorate anything you have to wear and hang your own Christmas ornaments and garland collection on it and wear it to the party. Keep it simple. Less is more.
