Are you getting frustrated about not being able to lose weight? Well, that just might be the problem. You are probably saying,”Huh…What do you mean?” Well, when you become frustrated or stressed, it can because you lose or gain weight. That’s why during the holidays, when it seems to be the most stressful, a lot of women will gain weight. Fortunately, it can be avoided and I’m going to show you how.
One reasons why you gain weight during stressful periods is because your body releases hormones that causes it to go into “the fight or flight” mode. This works perfectly if you are in a dangerous situation and need to respond quickly but for normal stress not so much. The hormone that causes this is adrenaline. Your body does not know it didn’t do anything strenuous and replenishes the nutrients and in return you get hungry. So, instead you sit down and eat. This is where you put on extra weight. The food that you are eating can be stored as what they call visceral fat. This fat is stored deep around the mid-section. Also, during this process your muscle uses sugar for fuel and the insulin levels rise so the sugar can get into the muscles. That is why you crave sugar when you are stress. Many Studies have shown that eating to relieve stress is a learned habit. When you get stressed, your body will release cortisol signaling it’s time to eat. This is probably why we sit around and eat to release stress.
There a few ways to prevent this enemy from returning. First, make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet and to eat 5 to 6 smaller meals instead of 3 big meals. By doing this will keep your sugar and insulin level down. Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep during the night. 7 to 8 hours a night is sufficient. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body will release cortisol, signaling your body it’s hungry and the food you do eat will not be satisfying. Also, get enough exercise, even if it’s for a brief walk. Exercise releases biochemical, which counter the negative affect of the raise of insulin and sugar levels. Don’t overdo it though because it will then raise the cortisol level and increase stress. Last devote some time to relaxation. Anything that keeps you calm like: reading, getting a message, meditating, etc. It will help to suppress the chemicals that raise the cortisol levels.
So, it’s not your fault you keep gaining weight when you are stressed out but you can control it so you don’t gain the weight. Next time you are in a stressful situation just stop, breathe and relax and remember this article, so you can enjoy the next big event or holiday.
